I know. I'd tell you, but I don't think you could handle the truth.

Now that I've beaten that joke to death ... um ... anyway, I was gonna say, where were the officers in the chain of command in all this, and why aren't they getting punished? Then I read: The Army identified the soldiers charged as 1st Lt. Daniel J. Schwartz, and realized that this was a start.

My guess is that LT is up on charges not because he did any of the hazing, but because he was in charge when it happened. Which is as it should be. The officer sets the tone for what kind of unit he's going to run

On another note: what IS it about Stryker units in Afghanistan? Wasn't the guy who made necklaces out of fingers and hunted Afghan civilians for fun running a Stryker unit too?

The most decorated unit in WWII was made up of Asian Americans who families were all in interment camps.

442 Infantry (new window)

Someone needs to get military history back into basic training. This is just beyond shameful.

The funny thing is an hour later they wanted to kill another soldier.

I don't get it. You never seen a Chinee before, son? Where you from? Upper Buttcrack?

You have to be mentally and physically tough to do what soldiers do.

Hazing builds friendship in the ranks. You can't be oversensitive.

2011-12-22 11:17:57 AM
The Army identified the soldiers charged as 1st Lt. Daniel J. Schwartz, 25, of Maryland (no hometown was given); Staff Sgt. Blaine G. Dugas, 35, of Port Arthur, Texas; Staff Sgt. Andrew J. Van Bockel, 26, of Aberdeen, S.D.; Sgt. Adam M. Holcomb, 29, of Youngstown, Ohio; Sgt. Jeffrey T. Hurst, 26, of Brooklyn, Iowa; Spc. Thomas P. Curtis, 25, of Hendersonville, Tenn; Spc. Ryan J. Offutt, 32, of Greenville, Pa.; and Sgt. Travis F. Carden, 24, of Fowler, Ind.

You are on the same side, you farking azzholes. Farking azzhole is too mild.

I'd like to state this story didn't give this old Vet any warm fuzzies.

Hope the armed forces pulls its collective head out of its ....ah, who am I kidding?

It's a frakin' shame what happened.
It's also a black mark on our country.
just sad.

It's going to be great when all these psychopaths in the armed forces are demobilized from Iraq and Afghanistan and put back into the general population.

It's an unfortunate fact that sometimes respect must be beaten into others. Or at least you must get your own ass kicked trying, multiple times.

WTF?
new york city used to be a tough place.
The things they were doing sound a great deal like what I went through when I first joined the infantry.
roughhousing, throwing stuff at each other, being made to carry all the extra gear, charlie horses, searches for 'grid squares', aussie repel with a shot of whisky in yer mouth, short sheeting the bed, asking the platoon sgt for a PRC (pronounced prick) E7..
Heck, we accidentally broke my arm when they were trying to duct tape me.
yes sir, fell down the stairs.

Sorry mom, your kid ended his own life.
Nobody put the bullet in the chamber,
put it to his head,
and threatened him with silly antics until he pulled the trigger.
A child who pretended to be a man and thought being a soldier would make that happen instantly.
We're far better off that he made his choice.

I always find in fun to read the postings of civilians about the military. I mean really... the level of sacrifice it takes to post something snarky and insulting about something you know nothing about is difficult to grasp.

Soldiers dragged him across a floor, pelted him with stones and forced him to hold liquid in his mouth while hanging upside down

If that's the kind of crap allowed in the military these days, no wonder there are so many problems with military discipline these days. You are supposed ot be able to trust the members of the platoon who are supposed to have you back. This is B.S.

Everything would have been okay if they had just used Nerf guns, dammit...

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Etch-A-Sketch? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Carmen Sandiego, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. Sandiego's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at birthday parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, cooties, pinky swear. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the bankie of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went out for recess, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up an official Nerf N-Strike Barricade RV-10, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what kind of milk and cookies you think you are entitled to.

/I swear this is the last time I post that paragraph...I swear...I pinky swear

serving in the military does not give one a free lifetime pass to be a douchebag.

The guys he was supposed to rely on in combat bullied him to death.
The officers who were supposed to run the unit didn't care or didn't stop it.
That's all I need to know.

My guess is that LT is up on charges not because he did any of the hazing, but because he was in charge when it happened.

That's what I had thought, too. The guy will be relieved for cause, at the very least. Not 100% sure he'll be court-martialed, but he could be...

No, being a friend builds friendships within the ranks. Any good person and leader would know this.

Being in the military is stressful enough without idiots just out of high school thinking the social dynamics within the military are the same. Jokes have their place but also have their limits, and most military members should know those limits. When they cross the line, which was obviously done in this case, they need to be punished accordingly.

DIRECTED hazing is counterproductive. Now, stuff like the ceremony for crossing the Equator (damned if I can remember what it's called, exactly...jesus it's been FOREVER) is something were *everyone* participates, and nobody's singled out.

Well...if you have a good command, that is. My ship was pretty tight.

Look, buddy, we can't have no civilians questioning any aspect of the military, ever. All right? And no civilians can have any input as to how the military is run, OK? I mean, who do you think is the supreme commander of the military? A civilian? Pfft.

I am a bit surprised they were not all from southern republican hotspots such as the bible belt. Nothing beats the church when it comes to teaching people to hate those whom are different than us.

Wasn't an all volunteer army supposed to produce a better and more professional army? De Toqueville, in Democracy in America, commented that americans made bad soldiers. Nothing has changed.
