Wow, this is brilliant... when a movie sucks people don't go see it!?

What would we do without experts?

I think they're being pretty loose with the term "expert".

This is one of the few years where we didn't have a major franchise release in like a decade. The new Mission Impossible is out but how much can that possibly...oh wait, they released it in limited release in IMAX and it broke records. But it can't be possible that these "experts" are full of shiat, can it?

And why does everyone always include the "popcorn and drinks and candy and nachos and pizza and leg of lamb" into figuring out the money for a film? It is possible to go two hours without piling food into your head.

The movie industry is doing just fine. Movies are the US's second biggest export and if the studios didn't cook the books to make it look like a $300 mill movie gross isn't in the red, you'd see that the business is thriving. It always does, even in bad economic times.

wait, I thought the narrative was that people aren't going to see horrible movies because the economy sucks and they have no money to spend on non-essential entertainments.

Well historically, people have gone to movies even during hard times, especially the Depression. And if you look at the top 10 or so movies at the box office they're fairly recent. I understand about inflation but since everything costs more, it's still showing that people are still shoveling out the cash to see movies, even bad ones.

But for $300 a ticket, you too can see scenarios like this enacted several times a game at glorious Citi Field.

Go to an affordable restaurant before/after. People have been doing this since the beginning of public movie theaters.

Ehhh depends on where you're going. When my girl and I decide to go to the movies, we usually hit Studio Movie Grill. Reserved seats, no kids, great food, and alcohol. If you go in there expecting to actually eat real food (not warm popcorn with fake butter and a box of sour patch kids) then you do have to figure in cost of food since you're getting your meal there.

Somebody, Forbes I think, does the same thing with their annual Cost of Attending A Baseball Game article. They include the cost of two ball caps, two programs, and a foam finger. I normally get through an entire game without spending any money inside the park.

It's the elephant in the room; but I'll admit it.

Here is why I don't go to movies anymore. I have (technically had, but you get the idea) a surround sound system, a 56" HDTV, a PS3 and a 5+ terrabytes of storage space.

When I want to see a movie - I download it. Most of the time, I download it in HD. It looks great. It sounds great. I pay nothing extra for it. I get to watch it 5 feet from the screen, directly in center, with the light, temperature, volume and picture controls exactly how I want it.

I never have to deal with annoying pricks/loud talkers/people going to the bathroom/people coughing/the sound of people eating/sticky floors/previews/traffic/parking/lines/high ticket prices/outrageous food prices and I'm not limited to the small selection of stale, overpriced crap they are selling.

Granted, I never see movies when they first come out. So, I guess that's a downside. And it's illegal, so that's a downside too.

Ring a bell? That's pretty dumb. At SMG you have a railing in front with a red light (not blinding like white light) you switch on (or they hand you one of the portable ones), it doesn't disturb anybody. The waitstaff comes up, quietly asks you what you want then gets it. I've never been disturbed by anybody ordering. You get comfy chairs too. They bring you the reciept about 15 minutes from the movie's end and you pay then leave. It's ultra-convenient.

And hows that any different than a normal theater? If you can hear people eating over a movie theater sound system, then you either have super-hearing or are listening to a shiatty sound system.

Because it's part of the experience. If all I wanted was to watch a movie I'd wait for it to hit Netflix or Redbox and save myself the hassle of dealing with the cost, the waiting in line, the inconsistent projector/screen quality, the people that won't shut the fark up for 5 farking minutes, etc.

And that segues into my next question, how has the rise of decent/affordable ultra high definition home theater setups impacted theater ticket prices?

Oh, horseshiat. There have been huge pockets of empty seats at the last 3 home games, and that's in the 2nd-smallest stadium in the NFL. I know you're just taking a swipe at Baltimore, but don't kid yourself ... Colts fans are soft.

reverendsaintjay: And that segues into my next question, how has the rise of decent/affordable ultra high definition home theater setups impacted theater ticket prices?

Maybe a little but going to the movies is pretty much a social experience. You take a date or you take the family out. And if it's a big movie, you might not want to wait 3 months for the DVD or BluRay. And for some movies, I for one like to be in a crowded theater with the audience reaction.

They trotted out the 3D thing for the same reason they did it in the 50's when the studios were threatened by television and in the 80's when the studios were threatened by home video. It's a gimmick. But whether 3D itself is working, people still seem to be going to the movies.

As soon as I read Studio Movie Grill, I knew you were from Texas. I do Movie Tavern down here in Houston. I love the fact that everyone is trying to copy Alamo Drafthouse. Tickets are 5 bucks during the day, so it can still be cheap. You don't have to eat every time you go, but when I do, for food and a beer plus ticket it comes to around 20 bucks a person. I'll usually go during the day when there's not so many people.

I go to the one in Humble (near Kingwood) on 1960. There's one on Richey Road near Gunspoint and one in Willowbrook. Here's there locations. (new window)

I didn't know there was a SMG over there. The only one I was aware of was over there in Clear Lake near the space center. They're all about the same really just Movie Tavern has these big steins you can buy for 10 bucks (or maybe 15, can't remember. Been awhile since I bought mine.) You can re-fill it with beer for 6 bucks anytime you go so see a movie and fill it with soda for free. I've been a big fan of that place for a while since Alamo was too far to drive.

Okay, that's cool. I mean I can definitely see going to a bar and grill that shows big screen movies and watching The Evil Dead with some friends, a few pitchers and some wings but if I'm watching a first run event film, I want a silent flashing light-free experience. I'll do dinner and a movie the old fashioned way, feed the girl and/or get her tanked before and/or after the film.

Besides which, although I have the tolerance of a person twice my size, I can't drink two beers without having to run to the pisser every 10 minutes which would cut down on the experience.

Oh I forgot to add, no kids either. You have to be 21 to sit in the area that they serve food. All the seats are elevated to where you never see the people or attendants blocking the movie. Bathrooms close by so you don't waste time. I only go to the movies once every few months, so I like to splurge a little. They even have a directors suite that seats about 25 or so with reclining chairs.

For a while I went the Netflix route - so that I could have a clean conscious....but I wasn't too impressed. Then I moved outside of the US only to find that Netflix actively blocked me from accessing the account.

'Umm, so I can't pay you to watch this movie because I'm not in the US? But if I can't pay you, I'm just going to download it and watch it. Are you sure you wouldn't rather let me give you money? no? Really? You don't want my money? Ummm, okay.....see ya'

Totally agree. Same here... and the food is top-notch and awesome, and they have a full bar- not just beer/wine.

Its more expensive, but its the only way I'll see a movie in a theater.

Hope this trend continues across the nation.

Releasing a movie that becomes "#1 at the box office" is ridiculously easy, at least on paper. Just time the release of your crappy G-rated movie such that every other G-rated movie has been already seen twenty times by families.

There are only so many G-rated movies a year. Get a movie about a neglected can of paint rated G and people will go see it (at 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 tickets a pop) if onloy because the hyper-religious breeders in this country think there's nothing else "decent" to show their insatiably bored, precious snowflakes.

Good luck getting it shown in theatres, though. The G-rated movie cartel is jealously defended because it's such a gold mine.

Just searched Movie Tavern and found one in Columbus. Im planning to make a trip. All I want is a movie theatre without the damn 15 year olds running around and being asshats as 15 year olds tend to be.

/Also tired of sneaking beer into movie theatres.

2011-12-22 11:17:15 PM
Most people I know (myself included) just aren't willing to pay the ridiculous prices at the theater for tickets and snacks unless it's something that's eventful (like Lord of the Rings was). It's just not worth emptying your wallet that much even for a movie that's merely 'good,' especially if you've a family who wants to come along when we can wait a month or two, pay nearly nothing to get the film and watch it on our big screens as often as we like while sitting on our comfortable couches without the random idiot strangers who can't shut up for an hour and a half while we eat the things we want to eat that aren't five times a reasonable cost.

Why blow ridiculous amounts of money for what's ultimately a better experience at home in every way?

2011-12-22 11:32:00 PM
One of the things that makes me even more reluctant to go to the movies is the endless series of screaming, booming, shrieking, thudding commercials for all of the shiat products I don't want before the trailers start. If I'm on the fence to begin with about a movie, the thought of the commercials is enough to keep me at home. When you charge top dollar for a crap movie, $8 for a quarter's worth of popcorn, and then make people sit through deafening commercials, you might not have the strongest business model.

Oh, and this time of year they also send a flunky into the theater to try to shake you down for charity money too.

2011-12-23 12:52:48 AM
This can happen to YOU.
Movie never actually starts at the time specified, lights dimmed for advertisements to start, advertisements raping my ears using same method TV commercials abuse, crackling of plastic everywhere from candy being opened, soft drink straws making THAT noise when being adjusted, teens run into the flick late and act rowdy for a couple minutes before settling down, more candy being opened, people are situating themselves, people are hacking up a lung, old people are wheezing, and even with all of that Hollywood better have PURE farkING GOLD on that screen! Oh, it's Hollywood's latest commercial turned full length film, JACK AND JILL.

Mugato: This is one of the few years where we didn't have a major franchise release in like a decade.

Well, there was Transformers 3, if you count anything Michael Bay does as a major franchise. I went, but only because they basically filmed a third of the movie in my front yard (our cats have been accustomed to loud noises ever since). Without the neighborhood connection I could have cared less. I think that and Harry Potter 7.5 were the only movies I saw in theaters the whole year...though to be fair, my wife is deaf and so we only go to the captioned ones (except Transformers which didn't have much of a plot anyhow), and otherwise stick to DVDs because they are almost always captioned or subtitled.

Mugato: Vegemite: This is the only way I go to movies now. Get dinner and drinks delivered while the previews are going. If I need something during the movie just hit the switch and wait for the person to ask what I want. It's the best way to watch movies now.

Words can not describe how annoying I find you. Just so ya know.
