A 2007 performance in a rock band isn't exactly the best example. This is more recent and shows her singing a little more Link (new window)

She isn't the best singer around but there are certainly a lot worse who get away with it (Kesha, Britney Spears). Also her voice is very mid-range so she can't exactly get all of those "pretty" notes of the singers you mention. Also you can't really compare her to Whitney Houston and Mriah Carey because they are two of the best pop music singers of all time as far as skill. Nobody thinks Rihanna is as good as them.
