I wonder how big the enclosure is. I'd expect a smaller sized enclosure would have cameras watching the animals for both research and security.

Good find and appropriate headline, subby.

jingks: I wonder how big the enclosure is. I'd expect a smaller sized enclosure would have cameras watching the animals for both research and security.

It's a wildlife safari type park (ie acres and acres in which they can roam) so probably not. Generally a pretty good set up for wild animals, but occasionally there's going to be problems like this.

I like this part of the article:

Umoya is survived by calves Phakamile, 4 years, and Emanti, 18 months. Both are now being tended by other females in the herd.

Umoya, born in South Africa, was one of seven elephants brought to the Safari Park -- then known as the Wild Animal Park -- in 2003.

Just like an obituary.

"Aggressive interaction."

I think the lady elephant was thinking more in the lines of "It's so big, I can't take it!".

Oh, actual elephants. And here I got excited thinking this might be euphemistic of a Paul vs Bachmann debacle, or the like.

Ever read about the young man working for the Peace corps in Kenya that came upon a young bull elephant captured in a foot noose? He freed the bull elephant and as the elephant was running off it stopped, turned and gave a big snort of the wind and ,apparently caught the man scent and embedded it in his memory.
15 years later the man,now with his family was visiting a zoo in Australia and as he was passing the elephant exhibit notice a bull elephant Looking at him intently. The elephant then gave a big snort and lifted his front leg. he did this several times. The man then climbed over the exhibit wall and ran up to the elephant with emotions high and tears ij his eyes.
The elephant reached over with his trunk and slammed the shiat out of the guy and stomped him to death.
Must of been a different elephant.
