Purple Hearts are a big deal for some people, and some people get them for nothing. I know higher-ups who got them and you wouldn't even be able to tell they were ever injured - the wound was akin to cutting oneself while shaving. I know you can order them for about 10 bucks...I don't know how hard-up you have to be to sell something like that for that small an amount of money, especially when, thanks to the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you could be getting college completely paid for AND get about $1500/month in housing allowances.

Must have been an Army guy - they seem to not bother educating their people about their options and benefits they've earned.

I do like to buy old medals, and military stuff. But I never used any to get ass. I got too much German stuff and people tend to frown upon anybody wearing a swastika...unless you're Lemmy

There are plenty of programs available to help vets get and stay on their feet. Not to mention preferential hiring practices, if one has any skills at all of value. The help is there, just get it or pawn your shiat. Either way works for me.

Justify it any way you want. As I've already said, the world needs ditch diggers too. Whether you do it in a snazzy little uniform with medals in to feel like you're a badass or not is up to you, but in the end you can't claim to be surprised that someone of this ilk is having financial problems. If he was smart he wouldn't have had to join the military; he would have had better options.

The first boy who ever asked me out on a date grew up to be among the first to be killed in the Gulf War. (the first one) He was shot down on the second night while taking out Saddam Hussein's communications capabilities. His Purple Heart is on display at our school, at a special memorial. These things mean something to his friends and family members, but I can't imagine that someone in a pawn shop would pay any amount of money to purchase a random veteran's Purple Heart.
