Why do't you try farking with this Amish guy, you queifs?

Hopefully they built a barn around them until the cops arrived.

I believe it's pronounced "queef," and I mean it.

According to the Department of Justice, the suspects used scissors and battery-powered clippers to slice off the beards and hair of several Amish

iat's almost as if these individuals aren't adhering to their cultural mores.

I'm surprised this got out. Most of the time, the Amish take care of their own issues. At least the Iowa Amish tend to stay a pretty closed society.

I know the differences between Amish and Mennonite. Do you?

I thought something along those lines, too. I guess I'm out of the slang loop, though, because I thought a beard was a girl who was posing as a girlfriend/wife for a gay guy who is trying to hide his gayness.

Wow, Amish people are even weirder looking than I thought.

If convicted, the maximum potential sentence is life

That seems like a pretty harsh punishment for cutting off someone's beard.

Sugarmoobs - I'm surprised this got out. Most of the time, the Amish take care of their own issues. At least the Iowa Amish tend to stay a pretty closed society.

That was the general feeling around here (I live in NE Ohio) when the attacks were first publicized but who did the attacking was unknown to the general public (I thought it was some non-Amish being major dicks). Since the people committing the crimes were some of their own who were also in powerful positions, the victims probably had little choice but to seek outside help.

Cultural issues or not, forcibly removing someone's hair could still be considered assault. I doubt these guys will do well in prison.

Mullet heads usually take on 5 or 6 mennonite.

How is it a hate crime when disgruntled Amish people attack other Amish people? A serious crime, sure, but a hate crime? Is it a hate crime if an orthodox Jew knocks the yarmulke off another orthodox Jew? Is it a hate crime if some wall street wanker scratches another wall street wanker's BMW?

/I had one involving watermelons as well, but decided that made my post a hate crime...

How can having someone's beard shaved off because they ostracized you from their community over sexual abuse allegations be considered a hate crime?

"If convicted, the maximum potential sentence is life in prison for the hate crime charges, five years in prison for the conspiracy charges and 20 years in prison for the obstruction charges." WTF?!?! Life in prison for shaving off people's beards? Okay, so maybe one guy was roughed up a bit for resisting the clippers, but seriously, don't you think that's a bit barber-ous?

Used to live in NE Ohio as well... was in the ag and green industry... met quite a few Amish and Mennonite people... nice, honest, forthright for the most part...

also partied with a bunch of the lapsed or seekers... and some on Rumspringa... again, a great bunch.

and yes, they do tend to keep most disputes within the community... and probably would have done so if possible in this case as well... but the fact that the police had to intervene due to the nature of the offenses... the DA can't give them a pass on this...

check out websites for local small towns in Amish country around Western NY, Lancaster PA, NE Ohio, Michigan, Iowa... and find the names of towns and counties... when you're bored... then do searches for police reports and try to spot the Amish... it's great sport when you're stoned :)

Personally I think hate crime laws are stupid. The motive for an assault is almost never goodwill.

I've thought about posting my mullet-shot on Fark, but I realize now the hurt is worth real money only...

I ascribe to protecting people when it comes to good things, but not when it comes to penalizing and sensationalizing for the sake of getting paid.

Read that twice.

Read it 3 times.
My opinion is that all crimes are hate crimes. You probably don't like the person that you are attacking.
and here is a scenario:
You get attacked by a bunch of thugs in an alley because of something stupid...let's say they don't like your t-shirt. You end up in a hospital for it. While there, you talk to the patient in the bed next to you, and he tells you that similar thugs beat him up. He happens to be gay. the guys that beat him up get 5 years because it was classified as a "hate crime". Your thugs only get 6 months because their crime couldn't have been motivated by hate.
You see the problem here, don't you?

No, the problem is bi-current-politics played a role. Real people politics would have punished both equally for dysfunctional crimes. Hate is dysfunctional. We are not different in this world; we are same regardless of culture, creed, geography, melanin, religion, yo, W/E.

We needn't have this strife.

The system craves controversy...

Well then, we agree. But I haven't seen "real people politics" in action for quite a while in this new, politically correct world.

I grew up working with Amish in Indiana and Michigan, bailing hay, working in cornfields, building houses. There's a lot to be admired about their culture, not least their work ethic, but they can be pretty harsh on their own. A friend's dad hanged himself in a barn because the community 'shunned' him - which means they essentially excommunicated him - for some petty offense.
