TheDumbBlonde: AbbeySomeone: Well done.
The sports hero worship in this country is a real problem and played a monumental role in a scandal that was covered up. Many lives were ruined and many more will before this is finished.
It's goddamn football, not rocket science or anything that really matters.

F8ck you. Go Gators.

Ha. I hope that's a joke.

Yawn...this outrage is getting stale. The student letter makes a fair point - "let's wait for the full details"...I for one can't wait to see the shattered remnants of Paterno's legacy dissolve like cold piss on a hot brick...but lets get some testimony in the books and clear up the "he said/he said" bullshiat.

As it is, it APPEARS that Paterno is indeed a pathetic protectionist...but let's start the trial and get things really rocking and sworn oaths attested to. I bet he never takes the stand, that much is almost guaranteed. Thus the "oh my hip, and oh my lungs" weak excuses are already starting..

Beluga Heights: We are in total agreement. When I hear about the indebtedness people feel to Paterno I feel unsettled (I know the program helped out kids, gave them educations, provided funds to the University, etc) but as I said in a previous post, his major contribution was that he was an entertainer.

Damn I'm still disgusted by this and the response from some people.

True, but to look at it from a different perspective. Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger are Sirs. How many former drug addicts do you know that have been knighted (that weren't entertainers)?

//Maybe Paul wasn't a drug addict, who knows?

They weren't predatory child molesters and they could afford their own drug habits.

Well the big difference for me would be that no one is talking about the debts we owe to them. They entertain, we pay them. They're only knighted because they spread British culture or some such reason. It's not like you have to be a nice guy to get the designation.

EVERYTHING Joe Paterno claimed to stand for was a lie! His name needs to come off the library and his statue needs to be taken down. The football program needs a five year exile from campus. Unfortunately because of the money they bring in to the NCAA that will never happen.

IAmRight: And of course we needed this greenlit. MOAR SANDUSKY THREADS!

The people who apparently hate it demand more internet outrage so they can say things that no one disagrees with ("pedophilia is disgusting") and then start claiming omniscience about what happened. yayyyyyy!

/everyone's interested in other people doing the right thing, yet the vast majority of people turn a blind eye to countless crimes every day.

Oh boo farking hoo. After roughly 4,327 threads spanning nearly eight months covering Ohio State's laughably light hearted scandal, don't act like Fark or the internet is giving poor Penn St unusually harsh treatment.

These Penn St threads are the tip of the iceberg. Don't expect people to stop mentioning it merely because you're sick of hearing it. I assure you that it does not work that way.

Better get used to rehashing this topic once a week for months on end. It isn't going away for a very, very long time.

dj_bigbird: At this point, Penn State needs to give it's football program the death penalty.

this.

the problem was the power of the football program. the solution; reduce the power of the football program, and the death penalty will do that. of course this will never happen because money is money and who the fark cares about anything else.

So how do you weigh 365 people becoming "better men" through a figurehead role that could be filled by anyone, versus god-knows-how-many children who will grow up to be "tortured men" as a result of his sanctioning of one of his coaches violently raping them. Where does that sit on the scales versus football players who looked up to him (they had to, he was their coach) for 4 years of their lives?

I have and I will likely have to again in the future. My job unfortunately puts me into close contact with kids who have been abused physically and sexually I have made many a report to the authorities when I thought a child was in danger. Joe Paterno did do a bad thing, I don't think anybody at this point can argue against that. That doesn't change the fact that he's had a positive influence on many people's lives. You have to accept both, that he did both good and bad things. Reading Bernstein's rage-fueled-tard-rant is a fine example of why you should never write anything while angry.

Yes, because no one ever thinks we should ever wait for the truth to come out in a pedophile case. We need to burn as many witches as possible before anyone is convicted of anything.

/I'd say I thought we left this behavior behind in the 1600s, but I can find many examples of this from then to now that don't even involve pedophiles...
