What they really want is to be invited to the White House for some egg nog to watch "Its a Wonderful Life".

Seriously, that is what Rep. Kingston said... I couldn't even make this shiat up.

I saw that live yesterday. I like Tamron, but this is the most aggressive I've seen her in an interview.

If rum, cigars, and DVDs are Kingston's idea of "leadership" I should be the Grand Farking Emperor of the Universe.

Don't blame the GOP on this one, folks. It isn't their fault the Dems aren't caving in to their demands this time.

Wow, just wow. Every time I think that the GOP could not possibly be any more callous and craven than they already are, they manage to defy expectations one more time.

This is beyond defensible by any stretch of the imagination, and has been for a long time.

McConnell's silence speaks volumes. Boehner farked this one up, though likely because of Eric Cantor stabbing him in the back. Again.

I would not be surprised if this becomes the straw that breaks the camel's back for voters. 100 Million people each losing $100+ a month on their pay check is going to be noticed, and it will be remembered all the way to November.

That sounds about right. You pretty much always see Cantor holding Boehner's leash.

What's even more ridiculous is that Boehner, unlike Reid, is not a vote counter. He delegates that to Eric friggin' Cantor.

Not smart.

I just saw the clip of them walking out. It's seriously damning.

Merry Christmas, House GOP. I hope you enjoyed your brief time in the majority.

Just more proof that the only thing the GOP cares about is making Obama look bad (though this strategy seems to be backfiring on them in a big way).

If that means the middle class and poor have to suffer, the GOP doesn't give a shiat.

You know, if Republican idea of "compromise" wasn't "you give in to everything I want" then yeah, I'd be wondering why the President wasn't doing that too. But with the way Republicans are right now, I like this line in the stand that Obama has drawn.

2011-12-21 02:19:56 PM
Obama needs to write an Executive Order to extend the tax cut.
Make it nice and simple, just say something like 'I authorize the Department of Taxation to extend the Payroll Tax Cut until the date of XX/XX.'

Then that would force the GOP to actively and open work against it, rather than just ignoring it.

This way Obama shows some balls and the GOP is forced into either bowing over or being the bad guy. It would be win/win/win for Obama.

You know perfectly well this is another notch on the "piss of teh libs" bedpost for these goons. These GOP coonts aren't doing anything besides what they SAID they would do, and they will be re-elected. f*ck. Anyone who would be disgusted by this wasn't voting GOP anyways.

The most frustrating thing about this to me, is how its getting portrayed on the local news. All they do is play the sound bite of the Republican's saying "2 months is too short a tax cut, we need Obama to show leadership and bring the Senate back to pass a 1 year extension." There's never any mention of the oil pipeline, that Boehner originally agreed to the 2 month extension, or any of the other extraneous stuff the House tacked on to their version of the bill. If you relied on the local news, you would think this was the Republican's wanting to give American's a 1 year tax cut extension, and the Senate/Obama opposing it.

It's really amazing to me how ordinary Republicans rationalize anything good as being done by Republicans and anything bad as being done by Democrats.

NAFTA? Clinton did it. Balancing the budget? It was all Newt, nothing to do with Clinton.

Same here. The local (Detroit) ABC affiliate did exactly what you described. My mom, who is visiting for the holidays, was watching the news with me and when they played the news clip, she nodded and said "that's right! Why not do it for a year?" I had to explain the Keystone pipeline thing to her. It's not about trying to extend the tax cuts, it's about pushing for construction of a pipeline etc., etc.

No, but I think the moderate, Reagan Republicans will finally walk away. People like Weaver95, for instance (but, to be fair, he saw the light long ago). The die-hard teabaggers will never be swayed but they're not the majority. My older brother is a card-carrying, redneck, anti-entitlement Republican who served in the first Gulf War and this latest stunt was enough to break him. He'll never vote for Obama because he's racist but he's sure as hell not voting for the GOP nominee after today.

This. I listen to NPR and, in one 5 minute-recap they have at the top of every hour, they manage to hit on every single one of those points. And it must not be relegated to local news--cable news seems to be doing it, too, since NOBODY I've talked to seems to know about the pipeline deal, Boehner's original agreement, or even the Senate approving a bipartisan deal that the House GOP destroyed.

So, they're acting like Democrats. Not my favorite routine for them, but hardly outside of the scope for normal behavior in Washington.

Nice to know that the GOP is now effectively the Tax and Spend party since Bush.

2011-12-21 03:39:55 PM
All this means is that we'll do away with the tax holiday for two months while we decide the specifics. We shouldn't have this tax cut anyways, remember the whole credit downgrade due to our out of control deficits?

2011-12-21 03:40:45 PM
House GOP: We are going to be here all break ready to negotiate with senate on the payroll tax cut issue.

House Democrats: Oh ok, how about we vote on the the senate compromise bill that already passed with bi-partisan support?

House GOP: CONGRESS CLOSED!!!

This is embarrassing it shows both how much this is only a political stunt, and that it's is all just bowing down to the Tea Party Republicans who now run the GOP.
