50 years is not soon, and I'm sure Christians will rally eventually to protect something fairly incidental to their religious beliefs.

They have no myrrh to offer?

2011-12-21 01:31:49 PM
Yeah. So says Ecologists and scientists and other liberal elites.

Like God's gonna let that happen.

Entirely the opposite of what the article said, submittard. It's again habitat destruction and that farking asian beetle.

Don't worry, the Free Market will make as much as we want automagically.

There's myrrh to the story than subby would lead you to believe.

Surely you don't expect submitters to read the entirety of the articles, and actually comprehend them, do you? Our whole system could collapse! Mass hysteria, dogs and cats living together!

Just plant some in my front yard and all will be well. Trust me, if it's not grass it will grow in my yard

If only there were a way to make more of these trees. It really is a shame that plant life is such a non renewable resource.

Just like the pine tree, this plant that can be harvested for an in demand product is just doomed to slowly vanish as demand outstrips the naturally occuring groves.

It makes me long for tequila. But that hasn't existed for some time since it was produced by harvesting a slow growing plant that only grows in a specific arid climate.

I feel like there should be a better, more concerted effort to preserve DNA samples so these going-extinct things can be brought back. Is this happening and I am just failing to notice it?

DeadBaby: I feel like there should be a better, more concerted effort to preserve DNA samples so these going-extinct things can be brought back. Is this happening and I am just failing to notice it?

There are seed banks and gene banks. They're under-funded, under-staffed and under constant attack from right wingers. They also don't have the resources to grow out seeds every few years to maintain viability and can't possibly keep enough variety to come anywhere near the diversity needed to survive if something goes wrong.

Other than that, everything's peachy.

Just raise the price of frankincense to be equal to gold or myrrh (after all, why should one of the Magi be a cheapskate?) and people will see an incentive to preserve the trees and plant new ones.

No, the exact opposite of decimated would be a 10% increase.

Double-oh Steven: "Our models show that within 50 years, populations of Boswellia will be decimated... nine times."

You would have to decimate something about 21 times to decrease it by 90%.

That word has evolved an implication much worse than its definition. And only idiots like us even notice.

I was getting worried about that reference going unnoticed. I should know by now that is a literal impossibility on Fark.

On the island of Socotra off Yemen (one of the the only places besides Ethiopia and Oman that naturally have the Frankincense tree) the number of frankincense trees are declining but not because of overharvesting. The goat the Socotris imported from the mainland run rampant over the island and are eating all the young trees and shoots. Soon they won't have any there either.

Words change and evolve, imagine that! No one* has used decimate to mean a 10% reduction since the 18th century.

*no one important, anyway

That be the first projected extinction in the last five years I haven't seen blamed, at least to some extent, on global warming.

Habitat deterioration>global warming.

Of course, you can argue that global warming=habitat deterioration, but let's focus on the basics first.

Actually, I think that would be wrong too.

I'm no mathematician, but my math shows that decimating something repeatedly NINE TIMES would reduce it overall by 61.2579511%
