The language student, of George Street, Manchester, was given a 14-day sentence at Forest Bank Young Offenders' Institution for contempt of court.

Young offenders institution? He's a 19-year-old man. Send him to the regular adult jail. Another case of how wimpy the UK is on crime.

If you don't want to be on jury duty, just start asking vague questions about jury nullification and they'll send you packing post haste.

Jury duty notification should really happen at least a year in advance so that you have time to arrange your schedule around it.

Theater tickets are expensive. I don't disagree completely with this guy.

How does someone young enough to be incarcerated in a young offenders centre end up on a jury in the first place?

then i guess next time he will just go to the damn jury duty and not fark around. and i personally think the court was to lenient on him send him to prison!

given that this is the UK i don't think that would work. also, although not sure, it seems he could have opted out. not sure how it works over there, but the article seems to suggest he had a chance to opt out and did it anyways, then skipped town once he had to do it.

i have been called to be on a jury 2 times already, within 2 years too. first was settled, 2nd was a marijuana case. told them it was a waste of my time, tax payer money and that it should be legal. so what do you think happens when you say that? still, got my $25. any guesses as to how it was spent?

Anywhere with a jury who decides the case would have a concept of jury nullification, wouldn't it?

As for your anecdote, I'd be tempted to suppress that to get on the jury just so I could acquit or jam them up at least. I've never been called for jury duty though.

While police went to interview Banks's boyfriend Christian Orr, Banks told the court he was recovering at his mother's home in Staffordshire while he was actually heading to see Chicago at the Garrick Theatre.

I worked in a county jury system. I basically checked people in, told them where to go, and listened to excuse upon excuse as to why people can't serve. This one old guy hauled this gigantic oxygen contraption up with him and said he was too sick to serve. Too sick to the sit there and listen to people talk? I'm sure you'd probably go home and watch Judge Judy. Give me a break.

This other lady came in on Monday morning, pushed her way to the front of the receiving line, and started yelling at the top of her lungs, "I GOT FIVE KIDS. I GOT TO WORK. I CAN'T AFFORD NO DAMN JURY DUTY." I reminded her that she would be paid for her time and lunch would be provided. "NU-UH!," she screamed. "I AIN'T GOT TIME FOR THIS NOW!" I told her that she could reschedule - once - for a month later. She noisily agreed and stormed out.

Fast forward a month later. Woman returns with the same loud, obnoxious complaints. She refuses to serve because she says she has to work or else she's not going to be able to make rent. This is around Christmas time and she makes up this story about one of her kids having to stay at the Children's Hospital. She shows me this Polaroid of a kid with tubes and wires running in and out of him. She's practically begging me to let her off.

I make it clear to her that it is her duty to serve, she will be compensated, and she'd already taken advantage of her one time reschedule. She could either serve or have a warrant issued for her arrest. "YOU AIN'T GONNA ARREST ME!" she says, storming out. The bailiff told her to stop, she refused, so she got the Taser. She was a big old woman and she was shrieking and flopping around on the floor. She still wouldn't comply, so the bailiff hit her with the mace. They handcuffed her and it took four big cops to haul her big butt downstairs to the detention area.

She ended up getting a 30 day sentence for not only skirting jury duty but resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. If it would've been up to me, I would have given her a year plus the maximum fine of $100k. Luckily, though, she didn't have anyone to care for her children, so they were remanded to the state. At least they probably got a decent Christmas out of it. I never saw the woman again, but I hope the next time she gets called up for jury duty, she acts like a citizen instead of an animal.

Teenage brains are underdeveloped and they still don't have a clear grasp of consequences.

That being said, this guy is going to experience consequences and repercussions for his poor decision. His parents, rather than treating this as a learning experience, are (according to the article) being whiney:

His mother Debbie Ennis said she would fight to have her son home for Christmas.
"He wanted a career in the government but he's got a criminal record now. We thought he'd get a slap on the wrists."

Yup. He's going to miss xmas and has (possibly) destroyed any chance of a future government career. (Contempt is a pretty mild offense in the states, but things may be different in the UK.)

On the other hand, he got to see a play. Worth it?

I'm a trial lawyer, so I'm getting a big kick...

Seriously though, it's so easy to get off jury duty if you don't want to do it. No lawyer wants someone on a jury who doesn't want to be there, they're too unpredictable. I once had to go through 400 prospective jurors to get a panel of 12 plus 6 alternates and the majority of the ones who didn't get picked were let go because they clearly didn't want to serve.

Young Offenders centre != Juvenile detention center, generally

Her Majesty's Young Offenders Institution:
Her Majesty's Young Offenders Institution (or HMYOI) is a type of British prison intended for offenders aged between 18 and 20,[1] although some prisons (particularly Ashfield[2] and Huntercombe[3]) cater for younger offenders from ages 15 to 17, who are classed as juvenile offenders.[4] Generally a young offender is regarded as such until the date of their 21st or 22nd birthday, whereupon he or she will be sent to an adult prison or can remain in the YOI until they turn 22 if deemed appropriate.

Thanks for the info, but it still doesn't make any sense to me that someone deemed too young to be sent to adult prison could be put in a position to potentially send someone else there.

Yeah, and if you decide midway through a trial that you can't be bothered anymore, simply notify the judge in writing that you have lost your ability to be objective due to a ruling by the judge appeared to you to suggest bias by the court.

I think that mother should be jailed too for being such a crappy influence on her son. What her son did was serious. This wasn't just a trial about some minor shoplifting or drug offense. Someone who purposefully ran someone over with a car was being tried. Christmas is important, but heck I've missed it being on business trips and such. To her "Oh no my son can't visit for two weeks" is more important than the fact that he wasted 11 other juror's plus a courtrooms' time, callously disregarded the victim of the crime being tried, lied to a court, and basically exhibited signs of being a selfish to the point of being sociopathic.

It's easy to get out of jury duty. But you are not the guy they should be putting up a fuss.... but rather, the judge.

If I got selected, at the interview process I would tell the judge that I have absolute, unconditional trust in the Police and that whatever they presume is the chief suspect, I have faith that they have the right person and that the person is 100% guilty and a trial is unnecessary.

Oh shucks, that makes me not impartial, guess I don't get selected. Darn this system of checks and balances, I'll have to go home then.

Yeah, because only Republicans in office commit crimes. So impressed that your Democrat leaders have clean hands. Must be nice to not have any hypocrisy in your life there, you are the man.

I think I will leave these here for you:

Sandy Berger (D) former Clinton Security Adviser pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully removing classified documents from the National Archives in (2005).

William J. Jefferson (D-Louisiana) in August 2005 the FBI seized $90,000 in cash from Jefferson's home freezer. He was re-elected anyway, but lost in 2008. He was convicted of 11 counts of bribery and sentenced to 13 years in prison on November 13, 2009.

Jim Traficant (D-Ohio) found guilty on 10 felony counts of financial corruption, he was sentenced to 8 years in prison and expelled from the House

Ronald Blackley, (D) Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy's Chief of Staff, sentenced to 27 months for perjury.

Webster Hubbell (D) Associate Attorney General, pled guilty to mail fraud and tax evasion. Sentenced to 21 months in prison

Mel Reynolds (D-IL) was convicted of 12 counts of bank fraud.

Walter R. Tucker III (D-California) was sentenced to 27 months in prison in 1996 for extortion and tax evasion.

Barbara-Rose Collins (D-Michigan) found to have committed 11 violations of law and house rules stemming from use of campaign funds for personal use.

Austin Murphy (D-Pennsylvania) convicted of one count of voter fraud for filling out absentee ballots for members of a nursing home.

Carl D. Perkins (D-Kentucky) pled guilty to a check kiting scheme involving several financial institutions (including the House Bank).

Carroll Hubbard (D-Kentucky) convicted of illegally funneling money to his wife's 1992 campaign to succeed him in congress.

Mary Rose Oakar (D-Ohio) pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor campaign finance charge not related to the House Bank.[

Walter Fauntroy (D-District of Columbia) convicted of filing false disclosure forms in order to hide unauthorized income

Dan Rostenkowski (D-Illinois) Rostenkowski was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison, in 1995.

Joe Kolter (D-Pennsylvania) Convicted of one count of conspiracy and sentenced to 6 months in prison.

Albert Bustamante (D-Texas) convicted of accepting bribes.

Walter Nixon US Judge (D-Mississippi) Was impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate for perjury

Of course, that is only a FEW of the many Democrats that have proven to be criminals while representing the people. I could list 30 or 40 more, but that would just be plain mean. I am well aware there are many Republicans in the same boat, but I am not blind enough to make a statement like the one you made above and try to come off like my party is so much morally superior that the other one. Feel free to curl up and ponder the hypocrisy in you words. No need to thank me.
