"It seems as if the senator is trying to say that what we read in our Twitter feeds is not that important, but we know that isn't the case," Wellesley College computer science professor Panagiotis Metaxas said in defense of his study analyzing the "trails of trustworthiness" left by Twitter users. "These days, people are bombarded by information ... and the consequences of misjudging (it) can be enormous."

Hahaha... stfu

By all means let's focus on $450K here, $100K there when $Bs go missing in Iraq & major programs. That will definitely fix our budget problems.

Yeah well.
If you've been a republikkken congressman from Oklahoma since 1995, it's safe to say you're part of the problem, boy.

If it doesn't improve my reelection chances benefit my district, spending is, by definition, government waste!

Tom Coburn amply proves that one need not be terribly bright to attain an M.D.

On one hand, Coburn is genuinely serious about federal spending, to the point where he's even taken on his own party over it.

On the other hand, he's farking insane. This is the guy who claimed that lesbianism is so rampant in Oklahoma's high schools that girls can't go to the bathroom together anymore.

In all fairness, the programs he cites add up to $6.5 Billion. Not small potatoes. Yes, there are bigger fish to fry, but this non-essential should be one of the first to get chopped.

Seemed good enough for most FarkProgsTM when Obama was talking about it (that is, cutting those insignificant budget items while leaving the humongous items untouched). Just look at the average sentiment in these two threads:

Hell, some people in there didn't want even that spending cut at all.

Are we frying fish, or pork? Normally I wouldn't care, as they both suit a white wine, but it is Channuka and, well, I just think we aught to err on the Kosher side...

Really? A $100k grant to bolster a HUGE Mass industry (JOB CREATING!!!!!) is wasteful non-essential pork?

6.5 billion in the scheme of the US government is not very much at all.

You're really spamming the thread with links to other threads playing gotcha?
Wow. That's an amazing rhetorical device you've got there.

You know how I know you didn't read the full document? #40, the over $4 Billion in fraud and waste by Iraq war contractors.

Too bad Coburn doesn't take a look at the billions in waste at the DoD. Right now he just looks stupid by opposing

"job growth"
"economic growth"
"child language skills"

Considering those links show how so many FarkProgs here speak out of both sides of their mouths when it comes to spending, they actually prove a point.

Besides, I made one post in a low-count thread. That's not spamming.

/speaking of rhetorical devices, nice ad hominem

How I miss Bill Proxmire and his Golden Fleece award. That was back when Wisconsin produced politicians who actually DID something.

How I miss Bill Proxmire and his Golden Fleece award. That was back when Wisconsin produced politicians who actually DID something.

He was the precursor to today's anti-intellectualism. If he didn't see an immediate purpose to the research, merited a career destroying Golden Fleece - no matter how many double blind peer reviews it underwent before getting said funding. NSF grant approval rate is 20-30% (depending on field). Do you really think they don't consider the scientific merit before handing out money?

'Merica needs more Dr. Coburns.

Participated in and voted for Debt Commission.

Is constantly shining the light on out of control spending.

Self imposed term limit that he kept for his time in House and I'd be shocked if he ran again for Senate after this, his second term.
