When kids enter the "terrible twos", they are coming into a fuller realization of self and are testing boundaries. Hitting a parent is a very bad behavior, and it should be dealt with early to make sure the child understands the wrongness of his/her actions.

Tying them up isn't the right way to do it, but some sort of discipline is necessary. Posting it on FB is just retarded, though. I get enough crap when I spank my kids in public. You're just asking for some bleeding heart to call the cops by putting this kind of abuse online.

I've found that my best weapon is my voice. A big, loud, "HEY! How would you like it if I hit you?" is an immediate, unpleasant consequence. If they do it again, repeat yourself and make them go sit somewhere boring, and if they won't stay there, put 'em down for a nap. Wait out the air raid siren that follows, resorting to headphones and heavy metal if necessary. Lather, rinse, repeat until they outgrow it. Reward self with beer after you're sure they're down for the night.

Seriously, the Parent Voice is a handy, portable, reliable behaviour-nuke. I've shut down an entire gym full of squealing kids with it.

My daughter knows the parent voice. She's a year old now, and knows that when I raise my voice, I want her current actions to stop.

We're going through minor tantrums now. I let her cry it out and then pick her up and love on her when she stops.

My friend told me that she would be very dramatic and "cry" when her child hit her. He noticed that it made his mom sad, and stopped.

My daughter is a little younger (15 months), but she definitely knows how to push my buttons. I'd never even consider tying her up and gagging her, though. It can be real frustrating when she hits, or does things to test boundaries (the current favorite -- looking you in the eye, saying "uh oh" and then dumping her food onto the floor -- sigh), but you have to remember "she's a toddler, she's a toddler, she's a toddler."

Anybody who reacts by tightly taping up their toddler's ankles, wrists, and mouth is demonstrating a problem controlling their temper. Taking the kid away from the situation long enough to assess the real risk is definitely a good idea. We all get frustrated, and sometimes you can be a little harsh, or maybe you slap away little fingers, this is understandable -- but if you can maintain enough anger and hold back rational thought long enough to get the tape, wrap the ankles & wrists and cover the mouth, and then post it on Facebook ... you have problems that may not be solvable.

IMO the only real defense -- and I think it's actually a pretty good one -- is the age. 21 is young for a male, a lot of people don't really mature until closer to 25. A few years of supervision may be enough to allow this guy to develop into an adult, and he might be a very different person (hopefully for the better).
