Aristides de Sousa Mendes even went personally to a checkpoint and defied armed guards and other diplomats just to help war refugees cross the border to freedom. What a tremendous story. This is the kind of person I would like to sit down with and pick his brain for a good long chat. He trained as a lawyer, had wealth, did he consider himself a devout Muslim doing charitable acts? Did he hate the Nazis for perverting the law, and then decide to screw around with them with his story of a non-Jewish sect of Iranians? Or did he have a Jewish "friend" that was targeted by the Nazis? Man, I have about a million questions that will never get answered.
