I love dollar stores around the holidays. Of course, major gifts come from elsewhere, but they're a great place to get stocking stuffers, wrapping paper, decorations, etc.

FTFA:
Brian Hanover, a spokesman at Sears Holding Corp., which owns the Sears and Kmart chains, said shoppers may go to dollar stores for the "perceived cost" and convenience. But great bargains on sturdier and better-quality gifts can be found elsewhere, he said.

"Whether a gift is a stocking stuffer or not, even if it's something small, it's nice if it's something of quality," Hanover said. said the purveyor of cheap crap from China

Dollar Stores are of the Debbil!! My wife can't pass one without spending $100 which, to me, seems to defeat the whole purpose anyways. After all, why buy a toothbrush that will last more than a week for $10 when I can get 10 that will make your gums bleed until all the bristles fall out 3 days later for the same price!? Ugh.

Unless you're going to create something awesome using dollar store shiat as materials, don't even bother.

The only reason to ever shop at a Dollar (or Pound) store is if you have a Youtube series making fun of shiatty plastic crap (new window)

All I know is my kid continues to play with some dollar store toys while some of his more expensive ones gather dust. Maybe he's addicted to the fumes.

CSB time: Forgot the toothbrush on a business trip once. Family dollar closest thing, nearest Walmart 2hrs away, other stores even further. First use I needed a needle-nose pliers from my toolkit to get a bristle out of my gums in the back of my mouth. I drove to Walmart the next day when I got done with work.

Shopping at the Dollar Store is great. You don't have to get dressed up all fancy like you do to go to Walmart.

Next time ask the front desk at the motel/hotel. They usually have a small sample of nearly personal hygiene item, as well as hair combs.

This story made me feel bad about how much I spent on my kids for christmas. Is it too late to sponsor a family in need?

Dollar Tree has a lot of good values. Got a 4 pack of 4 blade razors there. Are they name brand? No, but they shave like any other razor and you can't find that same deal anywhere else.

I did that. They didn't have anything. This was a serious backwoods area in the deep south.

I will admit to hitting the Dollar Store on a semi-regular basis. They stock some good glasswear and some craft type items.

I have a friend that does glass etching and the engraved pint glasses I had her do for my Dad and brother are among the best, most appreciated, gifts I have ever given them.

I was at Albertson's doing some shopping and thought "Crap, I need wrapping paper, ribbons, and ornament hooks" so I went to the holiday section. Each barrel of ribbon was $1.69 (and I got three), the spool was $2.00, and the wrapping paper was $3 for 20 sq. ft. which I thought was ridiculously priced, but I wasn't in the mood to drive fifteen minutes to Kmart (nasty head cold). They didn't have ornament hooks, so I went to the dollar store next door. Not only did they have the ornament hooks, but they had the SAME BRAND of wrapping paper and ribbon in the colors/design I had just bought! I got pissed off thinking how I could have save myself $5 by just stopping in first. Next year though I'm making fabric wrapping bags because it appeals to me.

I go to the dollar store once a year, in early december. It's crap. It's all crap, and I don't deny it. But once you add up fancy greeting cards, premium wrapping paper, gift bags, bows, ribbons, name tags, tape, tissue paper, and whatever other gift trappings you need, the packaging can often cost nearly as much as some of the presents. Or you can go to the dollar store, and the cost to wrap each present goes from like $8/gift, to $1.50/gift.

Then I get the hell out of there, before I lose faith in humanity.

99CentStore != Dollar Store or Family Dollar.

Most 'Dollar Stores' I know have a lot of items that cost more than a dollar, and they say 'well, the prices are all in full dollars, so technically we're stil a dollar store.' The 99 Cent Store is a giant sea of things, a good 5% to 10% of which you may need, for .99 cents.

I go when I need to stock up on cleaning supplies and/or Halloween candy. Then pick up supplementary groceries, cat treats, etc.. as well. Plus, it's a good place to pick up kitchen gadgets that you think you might use but aren't sure enough to go full OXO on yet. Even if the quality level is different you can get an idea if you'll be using it or just donating it to Goodwill eventually.

I like to shop at the dollar store, so I don't have to get all gussied up, like I was fittin to go to walmart.

The cashier at Dollar Tree yesterday asked me if I wanted to purchase gift cards for a friend or loved one. I just gave the "WTF? Are you serious?" look.
"Here you go ___! I was so thoughtless that I couldn't even pick out a gift at the dollar store for you, here is a card with $1 loaded on it." May be useful to give out to the homeless if you are trying to help someone other than people you know, but that's about it.
\Dollar Tree near me is in a very upscale area and one of the cleanest I've been to. Can't resist $1 boxes of day-old Tastykake donuts.

Dollar tree is the only remaining true dollar store. Dollar general and the dollar store really need to change their names..

We have a place here called Five Below. Nothing there for over give bucks. Great for cheap decorations or silverware and flatware, but not much else.

/they do have vuvuzelas for three bucks
//my old one broke because I accidentally crushed the mouthpiece in my car door
///want to use a vuvuzela for some music I'm thinking about composing

Actually, now the 99 cent store sells things for 99.99 cents. Which is cheating, but still not to the level of the other "dollar" stores.

Blasphemy!!!

They have $1 lithops (living stone plants) once a year.

This thread reminds me I'm about to run out of Minced Garlic. And I could use more cheap shampoo for the husband (who couldn't care less how 'nice' his shampoo is). And we're on our last paper towel roll. And I think we're out of batteries. And I haven't picked up detergent in a while. Oh, and I could go for some cheap turkey-bacon. And how close are we to running out of garbage bags and litter liners?

(At .99 cent stores, this train of thought leads up to, like, $20.00. If you have one nearby and can find parking, I recommend it. Especially if you know someone having a baby - a lot of cheap toys and bibs and the basket to give them in plus a card can be had for about $10.)

I've read that those pregnancy tests are very reliable.

Dollar stores serve a purpose, they are the "fast food" of retail, so that regardless of income one can still have a place to shop. Like any other store, there are some things that are bargains (Xmas stuff, candy, household cleaning supplies, utensils, small electronics) and things to avoid (frozen food, hygiene products).

Throw in Ollie's, and it can be a very affordable Christmas.

Yep, can't wait for more cheap chinese crap with extra lead and the special hi-glo toxic paint.

Dollar stores are good for wrapping paper, tape, clothing boxes, and gift card holders (8 for 1$ with envelopes). Mine even has produce, soups and condiments. I know not to buy fish or chinese toothpaste there.
