The US southern accent is the most moronic sounding thing on this planet. Seriously, what is it about that area that makes people speak like drooling inbreds?... wait...

Un-educated area, inbreeding... generations of this... ok I think I answered my own question.

You generally want to spit your dip/chew out prior to refreshments or repast, unless you're truly hardcore.

FTFA: "I grew up in Alabama, and lived in Georgia for some time too," Honan told FoxNews.com, "but it's not like I'm Gomer Pyle."

Yeah... I'm sure that's what "ya'll" believe....

Voice recognition software made in California only understands California accent, millions baffled.

Shakespeare defined the English language for age after age.

Siri is now going to define it for a few.

"I grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and have lived in the U.S. my whole life, and Siri makes a lot of mistakes when I speak," another complained. FTA

No... no it really isn't the machine making the mistake.

/nothing against the twang of the Deep South, or the whimsy of English Cockney, but its high time to realize that the regional patios variation may mean you get left out.
//speak 'proper' English please, especially y'all down below the Mason-Dixon line

I agree. All those Californians better start speaking English instead of that south of the Mason-Dixon line gibberish.

Doesn't surprise me that it can't recognize southern English. I can barely make out some people from the south and I take calls for a living. It doesn't help that they talk at what seems to be half speed, so if you ask them to repeat it takes forever.

I never had trouble being understood in drive-thru's in Ohio or Syracuse, but after I moved to Vegas, none of the folks who work at those places--black, white, latino--none of them, can understand my southern accent.
When I tried out the Siri at the Apple Store downtown the other day, I felt like I was in that translation scene in Hot Fuzz.

And now that Siri has escaped from the RDF and into the wild, reality sets in.

The cloud-based approach to voice recognition is novel, and allows much more horsepower to get behind it, but it doesn't address the two major issues that have always bedeviled voice recognition:

1) Everyone's voice is different, and computing power isn't quite where it needs to be to recognize all the patterns.
2) For many (most?) tasks, the paradigms we already have (point-and-click/tap/type) are far more efficient.

So what you're saying is, Apple's software is perfect; it's the users that are the problem.
