... there are still many questions for which the researchers do not have answers -- including whether heavy drinkers naturally gravitate fall toward each other.....

FTFM

I'll tell you, the Army, holy crap the Army. Drinking at 6 am after you just got off of 24 hour duty was just expected. Everybody thought it was just the greatest thing ever. And then 4 day weekends... oh God, the 4 days....

//Largest group of functioning alcoholics in the world. Almost all of 'em will tell you that, too.

2011-12-21 01:03:33 PM
I caught binge drinking from an ex. She never told me she was infected!

2011-12-21 01:04:48 PM
You know what else is contagious? Crabs.

2011-12-21 01:04:52 PM
So they have been to the University of North Dakota recently...

//According to The Princeton Review, UND is ranked 18th of all US colleges in partying

I wouldn't say it's an entirely unexpected phenomenon, considering the shiat that's been going on lately.
People who want to drink their troubles away will probably want to do so around others who do the same.

2011-12-21 01:05:45 PM
so is obesity.

OK, how many drinks is binge drinking?

I remember being asked if I "binged drinked" and was told that was 5 or more drinks in a night. I said "Yes, it's called Friday".

/I guess a beer every 45 minutes on a Friday night is severe alcoholism

2011-12-21 01:07:23 PM
Hmm, and here I thought that was how my family dealt with each other.

Two Hearted: I caught binge drinking from an ex. She never told me she was infected!

Could be worse. I caught binge drinking from a public toilet seat.

2011-12-21 01:08:19 PM
My ex drove me to drink... and I always thanked her for the ride.

2011-12-21 01:08:42 PM
Well, this would explain why greek life has so much alcohol involved in everything. Also, possibly explains why I had more drunk sex than sober sex thus far in college.

/Second biggest group of high-functioning alcoholics, before the aforementioned military.

People influence each other, and associate with people similar to themselves. It shouldn't be surprising that people who congregate together tend to engage in similar behaviors. This is not anything specific to alcohol.

2011-12-21 01:15:50 PM
Yeah, it's called "once people see how much fun an activity can be, they engage in it more frequently."

Also contagious? Cookies, games, legos, parties, porn, pot, farking, naps, kink, snowball fights, the internet, holidays, etc.

i have this problem, too. i blame the MADD crowd for trying to make me feel guilty for drinking a six pack while watching Anthony Bourdain's 'No Reservations' marathons on Thursday evening from the comfort of my couch.

What I do is pour two bottles of beer in a 24oz mug at a time, and voila, by the end of the night I've only had 3 beers!

2011-12-21 01:24:20 PM
Huh, so people tend to gravitate towards others with similar interests? And they find that drinking with others is more fun than drinking alone?

SHOCKED.

A buddy of mine just posted a picture of me on Facebook, shiathoused on some grain alcohol called "99 Bananas" at New Year's Eve 1999, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

/Not too many times, but I have my moments
//Like painting the sidewalk after a salmon sandwich and (4) 24 oz. Rogue Dead Guy Ales
///And yelling a racial slur in a (mostly) empty bar during a bowl game a few years back
////Why is everybody I know here and sitting down?

I'd rather be sharing a drink they call loneliness. It's better than drinking alone.

Maybe that's just me.

As someone very familiar with Nova Scotia, holding the study there probably skewed the results.

I've thought the same thing, too.

But I get the impression that a lot of the folks who are most vocally mouthing off about "binge drinking" really are teetotallers trying to get in the back door.

/so to speak

Every label related to alcohol is made very easy to apply. You're supposedly a hardcore alcoholic if you drank alone once, and if you maintain you are not, you're in denial, and have an even more serious problem. It's enough to drive someone to drink regularly just so the world makes sense.

What a groundbreaking study.

Couples who drink, drink together.

/don't ever date a non-drinker, they tend to be biatchy and judgmental

One night stands with non-drinkers are great though. You don't feel like a bad person, because you were hammered and they were sober.

/My conscience is an asshat.

Lt. Col. Angus: Whatever you need to tell yourself, booze hound.

I don't like the taste or the effects enough to drink very often. Best i could ever manage was drinking two nights in the same week, and usually go weeks in between nights of drinking. It's been that way for the better part of 20 years, too. But still know about how anxious people are to apply that label, and how after they do, cognitive dissonance kicks in and they get irritated every time you don't fulfill their expectations. It can be tempting to just give in.

So, is it still "binge drinking" If it's all day during the time that I am awake every day?
Or do I have a more serious issue?

How're you going to drink all day if you don't start early in the morning?

18th place AND in North Dakota!!
Well, looks like I know where I'll be going this Christmas!

Depends: are you in college? If yes, you're fine. If not, you may have a more serious issue.

/10 am shots aren't bad if they're in celebration of finishing finals.
