while not TECHNICALLY correct, monochrome is commonly used to describe black & white or grayscale images. penguins and giant pandas both have the black & white image going for them, hence the usage of the "monochrome" description.

Heh. I have that saved on my hard drive for the occasional "picture unrelated"/WTF threads. I was so excited to actually have it be (barely) on-topic here, and you had to go and beat me to it.

I know it's subjective, but c'mon, pandas are way overrated. They get all that attention mostly because of their color scheme, seriously. I've been to the National Zoo probably 100 times, I live nearby and it's free, and I've only ever twice thought they were doing something interesting, both times it was them eating honey out of a milk crate. 99% of the time they're in some corner not viewable by the camera even. Penguins are cool, but they're not all that, either. Swim...swim...stand there looking cold...swim...stand, eat a fish, and apparently I should have mixed in some poops. Sounds like fun, get pooped on by penguins and then stand and stare at the butt of a panda that hasn't moved in an hour.
