That wasn't Han Solo. You're thinking of Captain Jean Luc Picard who they met on Alderaan and turns out to be his father.

A small asteroid trapped in a stable orbit around Earth might be one of the few things that could restart a space race as nations and companies tried to find ways to mine it. It'd have to be bigger than a few meters across though.

The Millennium Falcon is 26.7 meters long. The Enterprise D is 642.5 meters long. It would be easier to maneuver the Falcon through a asteroid field with experienced people at the helm, whereas the Enterprise is sometimes piloted by a snot-nosed punk who only gets to be on the bridge because the Captain wants bang his mother. Other times it's piloted by random ensign of the week who we never seen again. And sometimes piloted by a future Amazing Race winner. Confidence and experience is going to get you through that asteroid field a lot faster than random putz of the week.

Astronomers just now discovered subby's mom?

Once we detect one, we can send a few astronauts to analyze it instead of getting a full crew to a distant one. While they wouldn't be able to land on it, they could certainly study it up close.
Why the hell do we need to send astronauts there? Robots can do the job just as well at a fraction of the cost.

Yea Yea, it's not as "cool", but until we get something better than chemical rockets or find something incredibly valuable, like a way to produce power using Helium-3, lets not kid ourselves about what will yield the best scientific data.

More like moonlets.

2011-12-20 08:10:33 PM
We are Mankind. We came from planet Earth, and we built this base, called Alpha, to learn more about space. But human error blasted this Moon out of the Earth's orbit. And so, we have traveled the Universe searching for a place to live. Now, we can no longer live here, and we go to face an uncertain future on the planet that has nearly destroyed us. You, whoever you are, who find this empty vessel of Alpha, come and seek us out, if we still exist. Come and teach us all you know. Because, we have learned many things, but most of all, we have learned we still have much to learn.
