Congressman Issa might be a farking sleezeball the rest of the time, but I do have to give him props for being against SOPA.

/will he cry on national TV if it passes?

Huh. For once, the partisan Washington gridlock might actually prove useful.

That's stupid. House is on Monday nights and they're showing reruns right now anyway.

Maybe my emails helped this time. Nah, somebody probably got some $$ to stop it. Briefly.

I think it's cute that anyone still thinks that piracy can be stopped or even curbed. Look if it's data, and you can use it, you can make a copy. That's just how these things works, there isn't anything that can be done to change that.

/ I don't pirate, haven't for years. Netflix, direct2drive, etc. FTW.

nekom: I think it's cute that anyone still thinks that piracy can be stopped or even curbed.

SOPA is not about piracy, it is about turning content back into a commodity to save the obsolete business models of the RIAA and MPAA. SOPA does not require an entity to prove infringement for that entity to pursue a web site for damages; they simply have to show that the web site does not sufficiently protect the entity's intellectual property.

Don't you mean WHEN it passes? I'm quite sure that the fix is in on this one.

Not any time soon since the House just killed the payroll tax extension, and Wyden says he's going to filibuster it to death in the Senate.

And they're not going to let the session end at all because they want to keep Obama from making recess appointments.

Don't feel so good, folks. This is just a ploy for the politicians to prolong the suspense in order to get a few more.....ahem......."donations" from the RIAA and Hollywood before they bring down the final crushing blow on America.

Only the ACLU can save our asses now.

No, it's about expanding the government's power to censor the Internet. It's modeled off of what's done in China, fer chrissakes.

Not really, no. Mostly it only screws up things that should pass/we really need to pass. Things that should never, ever farking pass either sail through or get caught up briefly before dying a quiet death so that they can be resurrected quietly later.

Seems pretty obvious to me. They're against anything Obama says or does.

Hell, I have think he said he'd sign SOPA just so the Republicans would consider not passing it.

This can be read as "put it aside until they can pass it in the dead of night with as few people as possible noticing."

The going rate for the US Congress these days is about $200,000. And Congress has already taken the bribe money from RIAA/MPAA/Comcast/Time Warner, so they are obliged to keep trying to get this passed. You can't just accept bribe lobbyist money and not deliver. That would be rude.

They will keep trying and keep trying to pass this. We need to stay vigilant and ready to take action (call/write/visit your congress person, notify anyone and everyone you know to do the same) every time they try to pass this.

Or better yet, vote every last one of these bums out of office, both D and R.

You can thank Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) for this. He's been pushing for an immediate vote on SOPA ever since COIN died. He has another bill in the works, H.R. 1981, that may as well be retitled H.R. 1984. It's a bill that would record and store the history of ALL Americans for 18 months with LEOs and lawyers getting unrestricted access. Worst of all, it's labeled the "Protecting Children from Internet Pornography Act" when it does no such thing.

Of course, Smith gets tons of contributions from the entertainment industry and law firms and has the backing of authoritarian LEO groups. The man is the enemy of the Internet.

Ok, so I have to threadjack a little bit and ask: "What is this meme?" I assume it refers to Tommy Lee Jones telling someone they're a moron... in some way, but I can't find the details online.

Also Cletus.. if that meme does NOT refer to frowning on something mind-bendingly stupid, please insert a more appropriate one in that general theme for your insinuation that SOPA is the same as FCC regulation of public broadcasting.

Republicans and Democrats are playing good cop/bad cop. They have the same goal - screw the public as much as possible, and get re-elected

//so vote Democrat - because they pretend to feel your pain.

Weaver95: I just don't understand the GOP anymore. nothing they do makes any sense.

After the 2008 elections, a bunch of studies came out showing that thanks to birth rates and migration patterns, the GOP was dying and destined to become a regional party. The studies were a little premature, but essentially accurate. Oddly enough, when the country is becoming browner and more socially liberal, the path to perpetual success doesn't revolve around demonizing abortions and minorities.

Thanks to 2010, the GOP managed to stave things off for a decade or so, but short of a massive shift, the GOP as we know it is dead. So the people in power are basically looting the museum on the way out the door.

A Dark Evil Omen: Then I guess we need to get the money out of politics, as well.

You can't do that as long as money equals free speech. And as long as corporations have equal free speech standings as individuals, they will be able to use their huge bank accounts to influence politics.

It would be easier to get corporations out from the free speech umbrella than it would be to revoke the notion of money as speech. And the chances of the former happening are somewhere between zilch and naught.
