Well, they finally caught up with Internet Explorer's version number. Maybe now their marketing team will let them go back to point releases.

Why the hell are they putting out minor revisions as major releases? It's rather confusing.

make me some tea: Why the hell are they putting out minor revisions as major releases? It's rather confusing.

Because they've given up trying to fix the big problems.

I'd still be using Firefox if it didn't eventually devolve into freezing for 10 seconds at a time, until even after restarting Firefox the problem immediately returns... until I reboot.

The only time I had such an issue with Google Chrome (after an uptime on the browser windows of ~3 weeks) I simply opened Chrome's task manager and restarted my plugins.

What the hell you using? a 486? Damn, I'm on very non-state-of-the-art crap and FF 8.0 with all of the add-on's I run is running great.

This is why I quit FF and moved to Chrome. By the time the extension authors catch up, FF drops a new version and shiat's all retarded.

It just irks me that Firefox was intended to be the fix to IE, but now it's worse of a memory leak.

I don't have any technical problems with Firefox, but I still prefer Chrome. I only use FF for Fark and LogMeIn anymore.

This has been true, unfortunately, since the beginning of software.

My 6 windows with ~5 tabs each was running around 1.7GB of ram the other day. No flash plugins, only a few images per tab, mostly text.

Its memory usage seems rather random.

For you FF nuts: Memoryfox. Yes, it works.

FF's habit of putting out new revisions so quickly is really irritating. It breaks plugins and provides modest benefits at best. Please go back to the decimal system. Firefox 5 was released in June, 6 in August, 7 in September, 8 in November, 9 in December -- seriously? I mean, SERIOUSLY?

2011-12-20 02:48:58 PM
I don't get why people are so up-in-arms about the version number change.
Browser version number isn't what breaks add-ons. It's incrementing the extension API version number that breaks extension compatibility, but that only changes when there are actual API changes.

Sure, it seems weird that less-significant changes occur as major-version updates, but in the past there were also significant changes to the browser that occurred within point releases.

Basically, the whole idea of major.minor version numbering is obsolete, thanks to the rapid-release cycle of so much software (esp. open source software). I think if you do monthly releases, your version numbering should just be a date, rather than an arbitrary number that people ascribe meaning to when there is none.

I had that issue it took getting updates of all my extensions/addons to make it go away. Happened going from 6 to 7. Didn't have the issue when I went from 7 to 8.

I don't even let FF cache to disk anymore, Memory peaked at ~1.7gigs has dropped back to about 600megs while idle. FF has been running for a few days.

//Firebug will eat so much memory it's not funny, it only gets enabled when needed

Mouse Gestures Redox is absolutely one of my go-to plug-ins. In the case of FF8, MGR ceased to work because of the version number (MGR is apparently not under active development any longer). The reason for this was because the install.rdf specified <em:maxversion>7.* -- which means that any "major" release after 7 broke the plug-in.

The work-around is to download the XPI and extract it, change the maxversion number in the RDF, recompress and rename the file before installing it. That's really kind of a pain in the butt, wouldn't you say? And, in this case, it's 100% due to the version number change, right?

Ah, I see the problem. Fossils use IE, they like the fact it takes two minutes to warm up like their old radios and TVs. Fat old people use Firefox, they're over 30 and feeling senility's first bites while trendy young people who lead the world in cool and sharp all use Chrome. Since you're obviously over 30, you see "old" as "older than you" which colors your perceptions somewhat. "Old" really is older than 30, which means you remember Ronald Reagan as a living person rather than an American demi-God. Sorry, dude, history's moved on past you and your grainy black and white memories and crank start cars.

Spoken like a person who's too young to fully appreciate just how much of their current web browsing experience was shaped by a years-long browser war that started long before Firefox forked off the Mozilla suite.

/ bring back the old Mozilla mascot!

I like that feature in Firefox where sometimes when I start it, it just sits there with a blank tab and the UI becomes `inactive' even though it's active doing something for a good 10 seconds before it finally decides it's time to start rendering some webpages and become fully active.. I also like that feature where it just sits in memory after you close it.. "Sorry Firefox is already running".

I ditched FF ages ago for Chrome and don't regret it.

You filthy whippersnapper! You think you're funny, don't ya? When I was your age, I had to walk to school 30 miles, uphill both ways, with my brother on my back! And we used cassette tapes and LIKED it! And cable only had 30 channels... in standard definition!

And if I wanted to browse the web, we had to use Lynx or Mosaic. That's all there was! And it took half an hour to download a 10 second porn clip! And we paid by the minute for our ISP service and LIKED it!

Uh... what were we talking about? Oh yes. My point is Ronald Reagan would have never stood for this Chrome nonsense. We need to fight the Soviets! Now excuse me while I drive my Studebaker over to the VFW post to talk about how uncomfortable minorities make me!

All the new rapid-release FF are shiat. I went back to 3.6 on the wife's computer, and it actually sort of works (and is still being updated)

Which doesn't change the fact that it also sucks. I moved my own machine to Chrome a couple months ago. Chrome with NotScript is actually fast enough to use.

Detinwolf: Because idiots assume that IE "9" is better than Firefox "3" because of the higher number.

I would suggest that the Mozilla Foundation might be better off ignoring the idiot market segment (large as it may be) and concentrating on those users and potential users who have at least half a clue and won't clog the support channels with inane garbage.

I'd like to submit that people who are genuinely concerned over the cosmetic appeal of a version number are part of the same demographic you're telling them to ignore...

The universe is laughing behind your back: Chrome with NotScript is actually fast enough to use.

Except when you have more than one tab open, and it for some reason it doesn't spawn a separate process for each tab even though it's configured to do so, and so UI updates on all tabs are blocked until every tab has finished loading.
