Personally, I'm GLAD his voice is muffled. I mean, the dude is wearing some sort of farking rebreathing apparatus. Wouldn't it be silly if he was wearing that and had a golden voice like uh... that one homeless guy?

Watched the bootlegged prologue, understood everyone else fine, made out about 50% of what he was saying, with about 70% confidence. Coming from someone who has a relatively good ear for accents, especially English accents, I'd say they'll need to make some adjustments. Judging by the old-time-prospector clip that originally leaked a few months back, they probably already have. This makes it doubly concerning.

Also, as far as the chant goes, it's subliminal messaging. They are clearly chanting "This is awesome, awesome" as a way to get you psyched for a movie that is otherwise shaping up to be shiatty, shiatty.

Agreed. I can see it now, though. They clear it up, then the nitpickers will come out in droves about how that wouldn't be possible with the mask. "Has Nolan ever worn a mask?!" They'll say. They leave it muffled then people will biatch that they couldn't understand anything Bane was saying and therefore the movie sucked. "ADR, how does that work?! This movie is terrible!" They'll say. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It'll make for asinine debate on the internet.

I understand that Nolan's Batman is all about realism, but I much prefer the Bane design from Arkham Asylum/City. Comic-iness aside, he was much more intimidating than what I've seen of Nolan's Bane.

Meh... that sounds like one of those studio exec trying-to-please-everyone notes. Personally, I say make sure Bane's dialogue is reasonably intellible, but cool. When you're happy with it, as a film maker, take a stand behind it. If some stupid frame farker (the same guys who track what percentage of a cigarette is smoked during a dialogue scene) have a problem with it... who cares? In real life, C4 explosions don't look like gasoline explosions, bullets (even those fired from an assault rifle) don't literally knock people into the air, no one can catch a ledge by the fingertips as they fall and just hang for minutes, and Batman's personal grappling gun and winch couldn't possibly work as reliably and effectively as it does at that size. But you know what... it's fun to watch. It's a farking movie based on a comic book.

You can suspend your disbelief and enjoy it, or you can think you're the smartest guy in the room and explain why one aspect of the physics of the world is off (acoustics) but not care that the very drug that makes Bane who he is could not possibly exist in any near future scenario.

kenryoku_one: Pochas: Sarah Palin's Conscience: Dalek Caan's doomed mistress: ArcadianRefugee: Muffled, sure. Critical? Meh. Just have him do his lines again and dub it back in, no?

And get Kevin Conroy to come in and dub Christian Bale while they're at it too, please. I cannot stand Christian Bale's Batman voice.

/Bane was a little muffled, but a dub over really would solve that pretty easily

Lord, I thought that I was the only one.

I find it completely ridiculous. There's no reason to sound that way.

He has to disguise his voice so people don't figure out that he's Bruce Wayne. Also it is more intimidating than talking like Adam West or Michael Keaton.

Then why not do an accent instead, I bet he could do a credible Welsh...

I'm sorry, but that was total BS. The main article cites films like Pitch Black as containing mumbled dialog. Yeah, no. The author needs a better sound system or needs to go to a better theatre.

I know Nolan got a few complaints after the initial screening of the prologue and claimed post-production audio clean up wasn't done yet.

Yeah, but I don't think a lame off camera ADR line explaining why the character is intelligible is a good solution. Just make him intelligible and fark the "fans" who say you shouldn't hear him at all because his mouth happens to be behind what's obviously some kind of breathing apparatus that none of us have any practical familiarity with in real life. Just make him sound cool. Cool always trumps realism in action/adventure films. Don't be a pussy and fall over yourself trying to convince fans that, really, it's in your best interest to understand the dialogue of the main bad guy. Just do it, anyone who enjoys the film with forgive you if they disagree... if not, fark 'em, I doubt Nolan's going to have any trouble sleeping at night.

I would say that a general rule of film making is it's never a bad idea to let the audience connect with your characters (even if that connection is fear or hatred). And apologizing for doing so with a sloppily inserted ADR line would be useless.

That makes the most sense to me. It's rare you'd test a film with the full-on sound mix... but then again, this kind of movie does have the budget to afford to mix more than once especially if the changes wouldn't be major.

logruszed: Do we know for sure they're going to lobotomize Bane or is this just an assumption based on him not having any easily quantifiable displays of intellect in the trailers?

You must have misread my post a little. I wasn't talking about what's going to happen in this new movie, I was saying that the version of Bane that Joel Schumacher put in to Batman and Robin was a growling retard who served only as a lackey for other villains. I brought that up to show why nerds were so pissed about that character in B&R. The disparity between what he was supposed to be and what he turned out to be in that movie was massive.

So I'm really hoping that Bane is handled much better in this new film, and I have confidence in Nolan so I'm sure he will be. Considering how top-notch Nolan is, I'm confident that Bane will be much closer to the character he was in the comics.... which is a good thing.

I'm with Nolan here. People seem to be basing this on a bootleg prologue shot on a cameraphone and a trailer where the character says one line while trailer music plays over him. When we see the movie in the theaters, we'll be able to understand him just fine. His accent just sounds a bit like Dr. Killinger from the Venture Brothers is all.

At the end of the trailer, he says "ven Gotham ees in ashes, you vill have my permeeshon to die." What's so hard about that?

let me tell you, she gets naked in that Love and Other Drugs movie. I'm a woman and I'm straight and even I couldn't help thinking what a smokin' hot bod she had. In fact, I kinda hope she gets naked in this one too. It's a body that should be seen by all. She's definitely near the top of my "should I ever have a lesbian celebrity encounter..." list
