F-4 flee? I thought it was a phantom.

Took me a couple of minutes to decide that was a typo for "fleet" and not a cheap shot on "free".

Flee?

Yeah, if I saw a gian moth that could shoo eye lazers and blow super dus storms, i would flee too.

Thanks! I was wondering about the "free/flee" thing, and hadn't figured out that it was probably "fleet".

Wouldn't the F-4 Flee be France?

Nah they have triangles (or they did).

Mothra helped Japan. Battra (sp?) was the bad one.

2011-12-20 01:04:41 PM
Can't they just buy some cheaper F-31s to add to their fleet of F-4s?

The Gunslinger Roland: Wouldn't the F-4 Flee be France?

No, they had an F-7 flee for a long time though.

Shoulda gone with f-22's is Sony guts on inside, just as good. Talk to my wife.

It's a little known fact that the Japanese did not need to wear goggles in the early open cockpit planes.

Came in to note the "flee" thing

Should have known it would be covered

They waited 31 versions of new planes before upgrading? And I thought my family was bad with new browers.

Fista-Phobia: Chilito: F-4 flee? I thought it was a phantom.

America's proof that with enough power, even a brick could fly. Favorite airplane from age 5-13...built a squadron of models, and can geek out over the variants. Why yes, I am a nerd, why?

Typos aside, I'm shocked the Japanese hadn't ditched their F-4s long since. They were a great plane for their time,
but even they have their lifetime.

imagonyx123: Can't they just buy some cheaper F-31s to add to their fleet of F-4s?

No, then you wind up with 2F-35s, which isn't much of a flee. Besides, if you do that then there's nothing to carry.

1. It's such a glaring typo that even the most intellectually challenged mod would notice it

2. Therefore the mod must have got bored and submitted it himself

3. See, it's all a conspiracy

So they really have as their primary fighter a plane built on 1950's technology?

And they go from that to the F-35?

If they're still flying F4's, maybe they can bust Randy Cunninham out of jail to fly them.

Nope, they have the F-2, which is the Modified F-16 Agile Falcon. And a ton of F-15s as well.

2011-12-20 01:30:31 PM
Even though the F-35 is all around better, I'm surprised they picked it over the new eurofighter, cost of the platform considered.

The fact that Boieng tries to sell F/A-18s to countries that don't own aircraft carriers, or more that anybody that doesn't own an aircraft carrier actually purchases them (looking at you canada and australia) surprises the hell out of me*. It's a great platform and very capable, but there are too many compromises that are made for carrier operations that add weight and complexity not needed for an aircraft that will never see shipboard operations.

*I'm a US Naval Officer and worked on a carrier with the pilots the last 3 years

Fair number of people are still operating F-4s because Phantoms are the best.

Evil Kirk vs Bad Ash: They waited 31 versions of new planes before upgrading? And I thought my family was bad with new browers.

No they waited until someone, A.K.A China, became a major regional threat to the United States Asian dominance. Big Brother USA could get it's ass kicked and maybe just a few flying guns of their own would be a big help.

2011-12-20 01:36:35 PM
They need a giant fleet of them so all Japanese people can just fly around the world constantly after a single Chinese nuke makes their whole country uninhabitable.

2011-12-20 01:37:11 PM
The Japanese should just elect Michelle Bachman, who was already foaming at the mouth yesterday about North Korea.

/On Saturday it was Iran
//Next Sunday it will be Canada

justanotherfarkinfarker: Shoulda gone with f-22's is Sony guts on inside, just as good. Talk to my wife.

I did not think we were selling F-22's to anybody, it is one of the reason the dam thing is very expensive.

I'm surprised they did not wait until DARPA get's it's UAV interceptor or their fighter/bomber program into production and buy those.

2011-12-20 01:39:40 PM
I think Japan's current front line fighter is the F-2. Which for the most part is a heavily modified F-16. If they are still flying F-4, they may be in a reserve roll at best. The F-35s may become their front line fighters, pushing the F-2 to the reserve roll.

Slaves2Darkness: I did not think we were selling F-22's to anybody,

yeah F-22's couldn't be sold to foreign operators. Not that at this point anyone would want an F-22 given what a pile of crap it's turned out to be.

I was expecting hundreds of video game or anime screen shots. I'm guessing the high schools haven't let out yet.

Thanks for the link, I was wondering if Japanese Heavy Industry still manufactured aircraft.

They're so perfectly American, like a muscle car. Muscular exterior, cheap to build, some dodgy performance aspects, but 5 times more power than a reasonable person would think necessary, cheap and easy to maintain, and everybody still likes looking at them (except the kids, who don't know any better).

Tokyo announced it would buy a total of 42 of the Joint Strike Fighters from defence giant Lockheed Martin, in a deal worth some $8bn (£5bn).

There is also growing concern in Japan about China's increasing military might.

Thank you, China!
