As punishment for offending one of our corporate masters we will feed you to another.

The lesson I took from this is less "don't torrent" or "don't seed" but more "don't seed a workprint of a blockbuster movie a month before it is released"

Yeah, being the one to actually leak a movie is on a level way above that of your average downloader.

Really, a year in prison for pirating a bad movie?

I think that movie is pretty sweet. I liked First Class, also.

Considering the CGI and other special effects in most of these movies. How enjoyable could watching an unfinished copy of it be?

I've only seen parts, but it looked okay from I saw. The only odd thing was Wolverine and his cartoon claws. I don't know how that of all things managed to look unrealistic.

First Class was amazing though. I'm looking forward to the inevitable sequels.

I was amused that he's doing a year for uploading a crappy movie and was able to make the news despite all the other meaningful and rampant raping and pillaging going on.

This.

If it ain't on usenet, I don't need it.

I am running into difficulty finding moral ground with my kids though. My daughter asked if downloading movies and games off the internet is illegal. I replied that no one has ever been convicted for downloading, but uploading is illegal. She seemed satisfied with that but I don't think I can hold her off much longer.

My seven year old son told me one time "My friend at school thinks I am a liar because his dad says the movie we watched isn't even out on DVD yet."

hitmanric: Considering the CGI and other special effects in most of these movies. How enjoyable could watching an unfinished copy of it be?

I didn't see it, but a buddy downloaded it and apparently it was a very rough copy. You could see blatant wires, cut footage, and basically anything that's usually edited out by the final release.

I wonder how much the RIAA claims these hundreds of thousands of downloads cost them?

CSB time. I didn't go to the theater to see First Class. I went to see something else but they were having problems with the projector so they gave me a ticket to First Class for free. Movies are like food, they are just a bit better when they are free.

It's different because the law in unenforceable. At some point they need to accept the change in market dynamics.

ultraholland: I wonder how much the RIAA claims these hundreds of thousands of downloads cost them?

Well, MPAA in this case. And their math seems to consistently be that everyone who pirated is someone who absolutely would have otherwise paid. Considering that a movie ticket costs $10 (lowballing), it's clear that this cost every corn farmer in the world their life savings, and also baby seals were clubbed to death.

In before the "stealing is not the same as copyright infringement" slashdot-grade morans, but not so quick before the "corporate masters / bought law" meme people here.

Best quote from TFA:

"While the studio was up in arms, Mr. Sanchez, a glass installer and musician who knows his way around a high-speed computer,"

This makes sense, since i've seen a few shops in my time too.

That's why the RIAA/MPAA love piracy. They are able to use piracy to justify shiatty movies.

I do it too, I don't think it is OK. I think a 1 year prison sentence is excessive. Then again it is his second offense so I have less sympathy.

I think it's just that they're better when you don't have expectations. Like if you get a free movie, you're like, "Hey, okay, I'll check it out" and you're not really expecting much.

/ for the most part, 'good' and 'bad' movies are just subjective anyway, so to each their own

This kind of parental hypocrisy dilemma actually gets easier if you yourself have been in trouble with the law as a teenager. When one of your snowflakes gets all uppity and tries to pull the " b,b,but you did all that illegal stuff when you were a kid" routine you tell them about your arrest and jailtime and then repeatedly stab the little bastard in the face with a sharpened up toothbrush. Street cred will always win out over moral superiority because street cred is never without a shiv.

Meh. I use bittorrent as a last resort.

Most of what I need I can find through file hosting sites. Faster downloads. No uploading ratio bollocks.

I usually do Criterion stuff and can get the an iso double disc in a few hours. On bittorrent it can take weeks or months.

hates all the captcha stuff though but thems the breaks

Haven't they done studies that show this kind of downloading is a form of free publicity that just increases the interest and puts more warm butts in the theater seats and that the big money interests actually profit from this?
///my paranoia kicks in thinking that big money is just playing two sides against the middle as they skim off the cream while everyone is distracted.
///Hollywood need to get over itself and join the 21st century

This guy leaked a rough, unfinished cut that was never intended to be released, and then Fox News wrote a review based on that copy. There's a big difference between that and ripping a DVD.
