If SOPA passes, are we going to lose our entire Internet publishing industry?

I mean, I can see Google, Facebook, Fark... pretty much every user-driven content site moving offshore.

Can you blame them? VPN subscriptions will skyrocket too.

The RIAA did nothing to stop 9/11.

Can't we post the names of everyone who works for the RIAA so we can publically shame them?

The industry group complains that phrases such as "lady gaga mp3 download" are still suggested by the autocomplete feature of Google search

And one of my results is amazon.co.uk, which sells legal mp3 downloads by lady gaga.

Hey RIAA, how about you try this Google search.

Fark you and your stupid marks RIAA. No one cares about your grades because the requirements are basically shutting down the internet.

I want Google to block access to all RIAA affiliated websites (even artists, this needs to hit hard). Let's see what kind of marks they get then.

Google, show them how the internet really works

That would be amazing. Strip all the RIAA affiliated videos off YouTube, block hits to all their webpages, profiles, blogs, and any news articles containing a mention of any of their artists.

Then if people complain, just say "this is what the RIAA wants your internet to look like"

To be honest, it isn't the right time for google to let us know just how much power they have accumulated.

That time is coming, and it will be magnificent. We will bow before our new overloards and thank them for taking control.

Wait, Nickelback's an actual band? All these years I thought it was just a derogatory term for a terrible band.

Seriously? If google decided to block all their services in the US tomorrow morning for 24 hours to protest SOPA you don't think that would be devastating? Every android phone stops working, no one can access gmail, webpages fail to load because they cant access google adsense, no youtube, no maps, no anything. I think they would get their point across.

Psh... maybe until the RIAA counter protest. Imagine what would happen if we had no... lawsuits... and other important RIAA products for 24 hours!

Uh, my point was that they need to act relatively fast before the US populous accepts draconian controls and crippled industry as set by PIP and SOPA as "the way things are". Or rather, that it's entirely possible that it's too late as the case has already been made to the Luddites legislators.

Hey, thanks RIAA for letting me know how to use Google to search for music!

Seriously, if I want to follow which file sharing service/method is the latest and greatest to use, all I have to do is read about the latest lawsuits. Chances are if someone is getting sued then they're the current big thing and all the RIAA is doing is shining a nice big spotlight on them for me.

Hmm. I'm sure this is supposed to give me a lesser opinion of Google. Seems to have had the opposite effect.

Google is vastly more important in todays world than the RIAA. If Google were somehow shut down tomorrow, the world would suffer and businesses would crash. If the RIAA were shut down tomorrow I honestly think no one would notice.

This means youre probably two or three steps behind where to ACTUALLY get stuff, cause that's where the RIAA is.

I've honestly wondered, for a while, what's with nickleback hate?

I can't claim they are super awesome, but they're not anything different than 90% of top 40s music anyway. Though they do remind me of pop versions of AC/dc or Led Zepplin or other souther rock stuff.

Personally I hate rock stars who sing songs about wishing they were rock stars. See "Rock star" by nickleback. See also "Beverly Hills" by weezer

I'm completely OK with this.

Think about it...for a day, an internet free of vapid, intellect-draining, disposable, homogenized and completely tasteless garbage pushed by corporations and media as "entertainment". It would be a thing of beauty. The best thing is, it would be totally legal and that industry would have naught a legitimate complaint or legal recourse for it.

Google oughta do that with each and every one of SOPA's proponents as well.

2011-12-20 04:35:30 PM
So a search engine, that does nothing but aggregate websites, is supposed to control the content on every website in the world? Yeah, they will get right on that.

Ya gotta love the RIAA an organization that steals copyrights from artists. Then turns around
and complains that people are stealing from them. They are nothing but an organized crime
syndicate.

I like the request that the RIAA made to remove the limit on how many take down requests can be made per day. Could you imagine the havoc that 4Chan and Anonymous could cause with just a few hours of unlimited flagging of sites and YouTube videos? It would be like the YouTube Porn day all over again!

Hey wow! Been looking for that for years. It was the subject of an essay on authority in a critical thinking course I took back in college. Funny stuff, and a very good reason why that band should be openly disrespected.

Every song they write sounds exactly the same, their lyrics are whiny, Clear Channel overplays them on all its stations, and they give off some weird "Christian Rock" vibe that gives me the heebie-jeebies. I don't know; whenever I hear them it reminds me of Creed. Other folks probably have other reasons, but that's why I don't like them.

Nope. The most derivative and formulaic J-Pop act is still 10-times more original than Nickleback. I can't speak to US pop outside of electronica, but when Anime end credits are blowing your songs out of the technical water, you have some serious artistic problems. Hell, youtube is filled with cover bands way better than Nickleback; one of many reasons RIAA is pushing SOPA, I'd wager.
