I just came in here to say there are much worse songs than "We Built This City" and that Starship was a decent 80s pop band. They do not deserve the ridicule they generally receive.

And while this was an entirely different incarnation, Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" is one of the greatest psychedelic rock singles of the 60s.

Oh yes they do. x10. People have actually injured themselves trying to hurriedly switch the radio dial whenever that goddawful tune comes on.

"In 2011 a Rolling Stone magazine online poll named "We Built This City" as the worst song of the 1980s. The song's winning margin was so large that the magazine reported it "could be the biggest blow-out victory in the history of the Rolling Stone Readers Poll"

Forgive me for asking, but why is it that it was so popular when it was released bot nowadays, it's considered to be one of the worst songs of the 80's?

I like the song, I like the movie, but I especially love everyone trying to rip out their eardrums... and he look abject horror when they realize they can still hear the song inside their heads.

Haters gonna hate. And go deaf.

To be fair, there were a lot of songs released in the 80s that were extremely popular, but to listen to them now is like repeatedly stabbing your ears out with a butter knife.

I think being played to death has a lot to do with it. I actually like the song as a kid but eventually I got sick of hearing it because it was on the radio every time you turned it on.

Actually, I personally like the song. And so that's why I wonder what it is about the song that people hate so much.

/doesn't let other people liking/not liking anything affect whether or not he likes it

That could be it. I remember Weird Al spoofing Achey Breaky Heart in a way that poked fun at how often it was played. And him refusing to spoof the Macarena because it was so overplayed he didn't want to torture people anymore
