That's pretty expensive for spiral ham. Especially for targeting such a notoriously frugal group.

Silly Jews and their thousands-years-old traditions. They're so stupid. Not like our good Christian thousands-years-old traditions of putting cheap baubles on trees, tacky lighting, and waiting for an imaginary fat man to come put gifts in comically oversized footwear that no one uses.

according to the Gospel of Biff, Jesus's Childhood friend, The savior discovered, and fell in love with bacon during his tutelage under Balthazar. It was also during this time that jesus learned Jew-fu, and did battle with the demon catch.

To all my Friends who are of the Chosen people, I would just like to remind you that Legend Beer Is Kosher certified. so why not ditch the Manischewitz this year? A nice hoppy Golden Ale with it's crisp hop notes and malty finish pairs very well both Bitter root and gefilte fish!

I stumbled on that too. I think the quote was in the context of "we do a some religious advertising that's targeted, but if we want to reach out into secular sources to broaden our base, we only reach a small number of people and can't justify the expense."

That's my best guess, anyhow.

1) Most of my jewish friends aren't kosher.
2) If it's not Honeybaked Ham (tm), it's not great.

What, people can't both celebrate Hanuka and eat ham? Racist much, subby? I celebrate Christmas even as someone raised non-religiously. And I'd celebrate Hanuka too if it didn't sound boring and lame.

Well, the company is a "Judaica and Jewish merchandise retailer." There might be a few non-Jewish people that could buy something, I suppose, but I'd bet that 99% of their customers are Jewish.

Perhaps it was a verbal interview and she just misspoke, because there's no way I can mentally twist "secular" into meaning "Jewish" or even just "non-Christian."

One of the retailers seemed to be upset that products targeted at 2.5% of the population accounted for 5% of his sales? I guess we should be glad he's not in banking or accountancy.

Most Jews I know are not very orthodox and eat scallops wrapped in bacon wrapped in ham and dipped in a cream sauce.

It's sort of like all the Catholics I grew up with were having sex before marriage if the opportunity presented itself.

While that is amusing, it actually is called Jew-Do in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Friend, by Christopher Moore. Which, by the way, appropriately inappropriate Christmas reading material.

As the husband of Jennifer Rivlin Roberts, I'm getting a kick out of these replies. You try having a 1-hour conversation with a journalist, and see if you don't get misquoted. Jennie knows her shiat, and advertising to a niche market is difficult.

And don't miss out on the Lil' Kosher Ham shirts, the Pork Lobby shirts and the Baxter, the Pig Who Wanted to be Kosher gift set.

Seriously? Advertising to a 100% defined small community of interest is hard? Go fark yourself lady. Advertising to the Jewish community is about the easiest thing EVER. Try doing national or regional advertising to everyone (regardless of faith, age, origin, language, race or gender) and then tell us how farking hard it is to advertise to one small easily defined group.

Eh, as a marketer, I'm getting a kick out of this reply. It's not that difficult.

Research what media your niche consumes that is specifically relevant to that niche/target demographic, and then market through that niche. For a Jewish audience, dozens of publications and websites come to mind within a few seconds. (Though I'm Jewish, so that helps.)

Though, if your market is left-handed Martians with blond hair and who read the Geek tab on Fark but not any other tabs, that might be more difficult.

No, that's easy... advertise on the Geek tab. As an added bonus, you might expand your market to right-handed Martians with blonde hair who read only the Geek tab, since they'll see it too.

I think the whole "no pork" rule was slipped in by a Rabbi who happened to own a major poultry concern.

Not eating pork is more of a regional custom rather than a religious edict. You'd be hard pressed to find a Jew in America who didn't eat pork. In Israel, though, the no pork rule is still in effect. It's silly to restrict yourself from any food and once a person is exposed to more than a single culture, the person realizes that all these rules and religious mandates are simply geographical customs.

My dad was Navy, so we spent a lot of time in China while I was growing up. Over there, dog meat has been a source of food since at least the time of Confucius, and possibly even before. I never thought anything of preparing and eating a domestic dog or cat. To me, it was another source of meat that was easily raised, slaughtered, and prepared. I returned to the states when I was 19 to go to college while my parents remained in China. I found a room for rent with four other college students, though none of them had ever been out of country. After I'd settled in for a few weeks, I wanted to cook a familiar meal after a particularly tough day, so I stopped at PetsMart on my way home and bought a rescue Golden Retriever -- five years old, 45 pounds, perfect size and weight. Well, my roommates got home from bowling en masse that afternoon, just as I was skinning the meat. Needless to say, they freaked out -- bawling, screaming obscenities at me, the one guy even wanted to fight but I was holding a filet knife, so he was discouraged. They took the carcass from me and threw me out, right then and there.

It's still amazing to me how narrow minded people can allow themselves to be. For a while I just cut myself off from my culture - no more cat, or dog, or guinea pig - but you miss the dishes of your homeland. There's no reason to restrict myself, though I do keep everything on the down low. The only people that look at me weird work at our local animal shelter, and I'm in there every month buying meat! I assure them every time, though, that I sincerely am a dog lover.
