Uncircumcised men are 200% more likely to give be infected with HPV and pass it on to their partners, who then develop cervical cancer and painful vaginal ulcers. Circumcision also helps prevent chlamydia and syphilis as well as reducing the risk of HIV infection. 30-40% of uncircumcised men are infected with the virus that causes AIDS. So other than the circumcised penis being easier to clean and much more attractive to women, it's the basis of male reproductive health. I don't care what they do with the foreskins after the procedure, but the operation itself should not be voluntary. For our children, the pediatric office said, "Hey, it's your choice to have the child circumcised or not. But if you choose not to, then we will not offer you our services. Kindly go somewhere else." If the Pediatric Association of America would adopt that stance across the board, we may actually make some head way on our battle against sexually transmitted diseases like cervical cancer.

Where is the outrage? Every foreskin is a potential penis. There should be a constitutional ammendment. We could call it the penishood ammendment.

Don't they make condoms for that? Given the choice between using protection and good judgment vs cutting off part of the penis.. I dunno, seems an easy enough choice.

Don't forget that it is possible to clean an uncircumcised penis--believe it or not. Unless you have phimosis, which has treatments both with and without circumcision. As for HPV, get the vaccine. A circumcised penis isn't going to prevent you from getting throat cancer when you go down on your girlfriend.

I think some of the outrage by the circumcision opponents is a bit over the top.

Yes, it's removing a bit of basically superfluous tissue. No, I don't regard that as mutilation, especially since it has no apparent detrimental effect.

I'm snipped, and as far as I can tell, it has no effect on sexual functioning. No problems achieving erections, no problems feeling pleasure, no problems achieving climax. Sex still feels great, all the time. So in that regard, I don't see what the big deal is, and also in that respect I think it is clear that it is not at all comparable to so-called "female circumcision," which has the effect of eliminating female sexual pleasure.

So thinking carefully about these things and reflecting on my own experience, I had no qualms when we decided to have our newborn son circumcised when he was born earlier this year. It healed quickly, and he's a perfectly happy, healthy baby boy. And if it has added hygienic and medical benefits (easier to clean, and deterrent to the spread of STDs) all the better.

I don't know too many guys who carry a condom around. For me, if the sexual intercourse is planned, then yes of course I will have a condom and spermicide. But if it's a first date situation, or one night hook-up, or a massage that goes further than I anticipated, then no, I'm not going to just weave a condom out of thin air. Being circumcised is like having 75% of a condom on all the time. So if I wear a real condom 50% of the time, then I'm pretty much covered. An uncircumcised guy is not walking away from a unplanned encounter without something that will need medical treatment.

Canadian Paediatric Society
http://www.cps.ca/english/statements/fn/fn96-01.htm
"Recommendation: Circumcision of newborns should not be routinely performed."

http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/pregnancy&babies/circumcision.htm
"Circumcision is a 'non-therapeutic' procedure, which means it is not medically necessary."
"After reviewing the scientific evidence for and against circumcision, the CPS does not recommend routine circumcision for newborn boys. Many paediatricians no longer perform circumcisions."

Royal Australasian College of Physicians
http://www.racp.edu.au/index.cfm?objectid=B5610716-9E3E-6C97-A8D8788 0F D002E3B
"After extensive review of the literature, the Paediatrics & Child Health Division of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians has concluded that there is no medical reason for routine newborn male circumcision."
(almost all the men responsible for this statement will be circumcised themselves, as the male circumcision rate in Australia in 1950 was about 90%. "Routine" circumcision is now *banned* in public hospitals in Australia in all states except one.)

British Medical Association
http://www.bma.org.uk/ethics/consent_and_capacity/malecircumcision20 06 .jsp#Cir cu mcisionformedicalpurposes
"to circumcise for therapeutic reasons where medical research has shown other techniques to be at least as effective and less invasive would be unethical and inappropriate."

The Royal Dutch Medical Association
http://knmg.artsennet.nl/Diensten/knmgpublicaties/KNMGpublicatie/Non th erapeuti c- circumcision-of-male-minors-2010.htm
"The official viewpoint of KNMG and other related medical/scientific organisations is that non-therapeutic circumcision of male minors is a violation of children's rights to autonomy and physical integrity. Contrary to popular belief, circumcision can cause complications - bleeding, infection, urethral stricture and panic attacks are particularly common. KNMG is therefore urging a strong policy of deterrence. KNMG is calling upon doctors to actively and insistently inform parents who are considering the procedure of the absence of medical benefits and the danger of complications."

So, it's clear that outside of the US, First world Medical authorities do not advocate routine circumcision.

Doc Daneeka: ...I'm snipped, and as far as I can tell, it has no effect on sexual functioning...

How would you know though? I'm snipped as well, but I still wonder if a foreskin would allow me any benefits. I literally can't compare, however. I would think the only people who could know would be those who were circumcised as adults.
