If you are a cashier, you might as well assume that you are being watched from the cameras and that your current receipt is being shown on that screen as you ring it up.

Also, everything you ring up/discount is kept electronically.

This isn't a new scheme.

Police said Marseille told them she didn't plan to do it, but when Santelus got to the mall, the two of them started talking and decided to adjust the prices.

Not to defend them in any way and they should be punished, but these people are facing charges of grand theft and organized scheme to defraud while the men who burned down our financial system for personal profit get bonuses. That just seems wrong.

/EVERYTHING $5!!!!

2011-12-20 11:24:45 AM
According to the arrest report, Marseille said she knew of another sales associate "who had done unauthorized price adjustments for other employees in the past," so she figured "why not?"

That's some logic there.

When arrested for murder: "I knew of a guy who had committed murder, so I figured 'why not?'"

Of course they got caught. They priced everything at $5. It should have been $4.99. Nobody would have noticed.

2011-12-20 12:01:37 PM
They thought they could get away with it because a friend of theirs tried the same thing at the $1 store and no one seemed to care.

Okay, I'll do it since no one else has.

It wasn't every item in the store. It was $1,000 worth of merchandise under the normal price. At Macy's in the mall, that's about 3 pants, 2 shirts, a pair of shoes, and some cologne. Oh, and the bonus gift fanny pack that came with the cologne.

Kohl's has electronic price tags everywhere in the store near us. It looks like such an opportunity for a clever hacker ...

Macy's on 34th Street in Manhattan, you are lucky if it gets you a pack of boxers. That location, they definitely cash in on their history.

Used to work Macy's security. Lots of internal theft. So easy to catch idiots like this, just a few keystrokes on the PC, "hmm...lots if $5 transactions?"

2011-12-20 12:58:24 PM
Okay... so, I'm not generalizing (or trying not to), but...given the area and the names, I'm guessing these women are of Haitian origin / descent. I'm not implying anything related to that.

So you are saying that the type of person whose employment prospects top out at retail customer service doesn't make a good criminal mastermind?

Hmm.

Somewhat related CSB:

I installed a CCTV system for a McDonalds. I got to see the results of the theft that happened a couple of weeks later. As follows:

Night manager is counting out cash. About 5k. Sits there looking at cash for a bit picks up deposit bag, puts it back down and picks up large envelope. Starts shoving cash in envelope. Looks over at the monitor -clearly- showing the camera view in the office with her activies right there in real-time. "Well thats no good, I am being recorded" she is obviously thinking. So she turns off the monitor. Yep. Just the monitor, and goes about shoving more bills into her envelope and then shoves that into her purse. No part of her plan was a good idea. Even if she had turned off the DVR, there still would have been footage of her counting out the money into an evelope and then turninf off the recorder. As did she think the money wouldn't be missed? Like the owner is gonna go "wow, we only made 58 cents? It must have been a slow night"

The good thing about stupid people is that they keep the security industry in business.
