the only thing worse than the soggy wad of bread and meat that passes for a burger at five guys is the paper bag of mush they call "fries".

But sometimes the two happen to coincide, as in this case.

These are potatoes, sliced, fried in oil, and salted. That's it. The only 4 things possible to adjust are type of potato, shape of fries, type of oil, amount of salt.

Perspective, people.

also not uncommon to drop for different amounts of time at different temps.

Five Guys fries are major suck. I agree that McD's fries are the best ever unless they are cold.

You East Coasters need to keep your shiat in your own time zone. The East Coast journalism bias shouldn't extend to overrated sports teams, and it shouldn't extend to overrated fast food joints either. Five Guys is terrible.

/Wendy's fries can suck, but sometimes they're awesome when they're actually cooked and not overly salted

Wrong. Good fries are fried twice.

And when they deep fried the apple pies right next to them. Sugary molten lava inside a deep fried crust.

Wendy's new burgers are actually pretty damn good. Meat tastes fresher, better bun, fresh, crisp L/T/O.

People who hate Five Guys fries must be allergic to peanut oil or something because they farking rule.

Now, the burgers... they're pretty good for fast food, but the D.C. area is overrun with great burgers, so I no longer concern myself with that.

As I've said before, the best french fries are McDonald's. The worst are those same fries 15 minutes later.

I want to make a trip to DC just to have another burger at Good Stuff Eatery. It's been over a year and I am still craving that lunch I had when we were down there. That place is awesome.

I make my own since the Vegans took the beef tallow out of the fry oil:

Baked Garlic-Rosemary Fries
1 large russet potato
1 large garlic clove - minced
2 Tbsp dry rosemary
Olive oil
salt
Preheat oven to 450°F
Cut the potato into 1/4-inch stick.
In a large bowl, toss the potato sticks in some olive oil. Toss
them well then add in the garlic, rosemary and a sprinkling of
salt.
Plce on a baking sheet lies with parchment paper and bake
for 40-45 min. Give them a toss halfway through.
To get them slightly crisper, place them in the broiler for 2
min after the oven.

I like Del Taco's plain ol' crinkle fries. They're probably my favorite of all the fast food places.

I've become a complete fry snob since I moved to Holland and got hooked on frites and mayo.

I'm flying to the States tomorrow for 3 weeks and am tempted to stop in a Five Guys for nostalgia purposes, but am paranoid that it'll suck and just ruin good memories.

Maybe the BK near me doesn't know what it's doing, but their new fries have been ridiculously soggy and greasy.

Wendy's new fries are merely okay, their new burgers are pretty much the same or worse than the older ones.

Culvert's fries look (and taste) just like frozen Ore Ida crinkle cuts -- which is to say like something my mom baked in the sixties. In fact there is nothing from Culvert's that doesn't look like it came from a refrigerator from the sixties.

I do like In N Out's fries and 5 guys fries and McD's.

Also subby's sister makes some nice fries and they are fun to share in bed.

BravadoGT: Wendy's new burgers are actually pretty damn good. Meat tastes fresher, better bun, fresh, crisp L/T/O.

Interesting, 'cos Wendy's burgers have always been way better than either BK or McD.

But yeah, their fries suck.

2011-12-20 04:47:44 AM
My take on the whole thing:

McDonald's fries: they are good because they are salty as hell. Sometimes you get them and they are just like potato flavored pretzels, not cool.

Wendy's fries before they changed: white, soft, unsalted. Perfect for drowning in ketchup. I miss them so much :(

Wendy's fries now: pretty damn good, like if I went to a new place and had them I would be impressed. But they aren't Wendy's fries to me, and the new burgers... not hating on them either but really, if they are going to change everything they may as well change the name/signs/colors because I'm not coming back to Wendy's because Wendy's is DEAD TO ME.

Burgerking: their grease is disgusting, so they have thicker cut fries now? That just means more disgusting grease. And they don't wax their paper cups properly. By time you make it home your drink tastes like cardboard, or by your 2nd refill if you eat there. BK is for Whoppers & pies only.

5 guys: wtf is that?

Sonic: Umm, onion rings k thks

To my memory, Wendy's fries were the best. But I haven't have fast food fries in I can't remember how long.

I dunno what they did with the fries in the states, but when Wendy's starting offering these new fries "With Sea Salt (tm)", the fries ended up having so much salt on them that i could hardly eat them. And I eat a lot of salty things.

Coating. type of salt. Skin or not. (in addition to the time, double frying, and temps already mentioned)

I don't notice the salt, but it seems to be at times that the "natural skin" has been painted on and has no taste or texture of its own.

Either east coast Five Guys lovers' taste buds are completely out of whack, or the Five Guys they opened here is overpriced garbage. For less money I can buy a French burger at Nationwide Meats. Chains are never as good as a great local joint... Murderburger (now Redrum), Hagen's, Squeeze Inn, Burgers and Brew... I'm certain every city has a number of burger/fries places which make better burgers and fries than every chain. There used to be two reasons to brave SF's Tenderloin: visiting Fritz Leiber and a burger at Original Joe's. Now they're both gone. Where now is a great burger in The City?

2011-12-20 05:28:19 AM
"Five Guys" makes the best burgers around, but if you think they make good French Fries, then you've never even seen a REAL one, let alone tasted one. Here's a clue: IF YOU CAN BEND IT SO THAT BOTH ENDS TOUCH WITHOUT BREAKING, IT'S NOT A FRENCH FRY.

I say this in all seriousness. 90% of the people reading this have never had genuine French Fries. Their idea of what constitutes a French Fry has been molded and warped by the McDonald's version to the point that they will declare ANYTHING that deviates slightly to be "the best fries I've ever had". Not an impressive boast, if you have nothing to compare it with or no frame of reference.

French Fries -- REAL French Fries -- are a lost art, up there with Greek Fire and Dega's pastel fixer.

We're not quite as blessed with choice over here in the UK (what have we got? MacDonalds, Burger King and, erm, Wimpy? they still going? bloody shouldn't be--avoid if they are), but Burger King fries taste pretty damn good to me. I assume it's all the chemicals they spray on 'em to make them so crispy. Boy, I do loves me some Burger King. I can't imagine the new recipe reaching us all that quickly and that's fine with me - if it aint broke, don't fix it!

Wendy's has royally screwed themselves. Their new burgers are packaged in a bizarre wrapper that ensures they'll be ice-cold before you hit the door. On the plus side, it's not likely to happen to you twice, since they taste horrible. [Clue Phone for Wendys: "Put mustard on the damn thing! And go back to dill pickles."]

Wendy's problem is that they (snicker-snicker) IMAGINE they're Five-Guys. Reality check: You CAN'T get a burger at Five-Guys in under 5 minutes. Why? Because THEY COOK THE HAMBURGER. There is actual caramelization and grill marks on the burger. Wendy's barely gets their brown and they're out the door. They might as well use the friggin' micro-wave.

There's something about McDonald's fries that is inexplicable. Texture is great, thickness is perfect for grabbing multiples at once for the dipping and it somehow they are able to penetrate your sub-conscious and tell it that it needs more of it at random times of your daily life.

In-N-Out Fries are amazing when hot, bland if not. I notice that Five Guys Fanboys/East Coasters will tend to bash on INO's fries whenever the best burger joint threads go off, but they really are something else when fresh. I kind of got over the whole animal style thing, but there was a time that it was like crack to me.

My personal favorite fries from any fast food place would have to be those from Steak Escape, though I don't know if they are prevalent enough to qualify in a tasty fry competition. If you've never tried them, go grab a small the next time you're at the mall and be ready to have your mind blown.

/2 cents

It was a sad day for me when Wendy's changed their fries. Theirs used to be my all time favorite of the fast food chains. Now, they're just ok. Man I was bummed, so much so that I got even more depressed at how deeply it was affecting me. Del Taco have pretty farking good fries and with their tacos, a potent combination. Don't care for McD's (I know I'm in a small group there) and BK's fries now suck.

lrosu79: The few times I have eaten Five Guys fries, they were under cooked and tasted half raw is this normal?

Most assuredly not. I wonder how much quality control they have at that location, because they usually come out great.

And Subby, if you love Five Guys, you should try the place they base their fries off of. Thrashers, in Ocean City MD, is about the only place that can top Five Guys in fries.

2011-12-20 07:43:28 AM
Five-Guy's "fries" are almost the exact opposite of "French Fries. If they were any more limp, they'd be a liquid. What part of "fry" don't they grok?

2011-12-20 09:32:57 AM
The one true fast food fry was the Mcdonalds' fry before they took the beef tallow out.

The best fry out there is any fry at a restaurant that cuts them REAL skinny and fries them in truffle oil. That shiat is crack cocaine.

2011-12-20 09:43:40 AM
I will say that doing an air fry with a couple of tablespoons of duck fat make awesome fries.,
If time allows, soaking in water, dumping water and drying out then frying.

My favourite fast food fries (surprised nobody has mentioned them yet):

blog.ncsudining.com

and

4.bp.blogspot.com

They're unconventional compared to the others that have been mentioned but that's probably why I like them.
