They didn't have travel insurance, and he saw no point in risking having to pay in the event that she was resuscitated.

I know they're really strict about using the HOV lanes.

If he'd already purchased a burial plot he could have just gone straight to the cemetary -- "drove her to her grave" FTW.

What's wrong with taking her home? Why stop and wrack up $10,000 in American medical bills to have her pronounced dead?

They maybe should have asked to take a brief look and then sent him on his way.

Our system is so screwed up.

Not to mention the $$$ collected by someone to transport her. Because you can't transport a dead body yourself, some official person has to do it. I expect they'd charge more to take her across an international border. A LOT more.

The body was to be returned to Canada.

There goes the fellow's retirement fund.

/My mother died at my sister's last week, and they charged her $400 to take Mom to the funeral home, so I'm really getting a kick.......well, not really, actually.

Poor old guy. Canadians (of which I'm one )have a pathological fear of the US health care system. They've been scare-mongered stories on people being charged a million dollars for a night in a US hospital so that those with a political/financial interest in the Canadian system can block any productivity changes to Canadian health care. The old guy probably was afraid he wouldn't get his wife back if he stopped at a US hospital.

New Democrats (what the US would call The Communist Party) have a special interest in never changing the health care system because they represent the unions, and the nurses union in Canada is very powerful. The Liberal Party (what Americans would call Democrats) now just do whatever the NDP tells them. Both parties lie about the US system so much that it makes the North Korea propaganda machine look like the gospel truth.

When I start talking Canadian politics on Fark, it's a sign I had too much to drink.

Maybe he can get by with just getting new clean socks. If they need to be washed, he could turn them inside out and squeeze a few more days out of them.

To Tonasket from Pasco? He probably drove right past my house. I should have waved, or invited them in for coffee and...whatever a corpse needs to keep from decomposing for a couple of days.

FTFA - Okanogan County sheriff's dispatchers who received the call Sunday afternoon persuaded the man to stop at the Tonasket Police Department.

....

Police have determined there was nothing suspicious in her death, Burks told the World.

The body was to be returned to Canada.

I thought he was taking her back to Canada to avoid shipping costs until I got to the end of the article. Now I get the impression the poor guy was just at a loss for what to do or else he wouldn't have called.
