Huh. Of the 117 people I follow on Twitter, exactly one of them was on that list: Stephen Colbert.

Most of the people I follow are scientists or science writers, with a few quality celbrities (e.g. Nathan Fillion, Stephen Fry, Eddie Izzard, etc), some game developers (Frozenbyte, some Bioware guys, Humble Bundle folks, etc), and then various IRL friends and family mixed in.

I guess I'm probably doing it wrong. :-/

Just read every one of those and the only ones i found remotely interesting were Tom Waits and Julieanne Smolinski.

When I followed Kelly Oxford I started noticing just about every tweet of hers was a comment I saw on fark earlier that day/week. Maybe it was just a phase, I haven't followed in awhile, but at least we know she's a fan of this site.

Also, how @robdelany isn't on the list is beyond me. The dude is Twitter Superman

"RAAAHHH I'm so angry about hockey!" 5x per hour.

Yep, I stopped following him when he complained about construction workers next door and their loud, foul mouths. Y'know, kind of like his own tweets.

I just use Twitter to follow a few dozen names I like, get sports news, etc. I neither care nor want anyone to follow me. I made my username one that I can laught at, but have no intention of sharing it, or ever posting anything to it.

I guess I don't get Twitter either. I have an account and follow a few people but what am I supposed to do with it? I think I may look at it maybe once a month or so. Am I supposed to be watching it constantly?

OhioUGrad: Never got the point of twitter, or being on it...oh well, looks like I'm not missing much.

I upgraded from a crappy old RAZR to a Pantech Link feature phone a year and a half ago. I don't need a smartphone, or wireless, or even Windows 7 for that matter. (I'm one of those guys who milks what he can out of old technology.) When I did this, I checked into AT&T Social Net, included with the phone. I had never been a fan of the Facebook concept, but I started reading up on Twitter and decided that, since I had the phone and the capacity, I could start an account.

At first it was my idea to use it for sort of an ADD management tool. (Think Norm MacDonald and his tape recorder: "Note to self.") I would just tweet random thoughts as they popped into my head. I didn't care (and still don't) if anyone followed me. After a while, I found some of my friends (very few) were on Twitter also, so we were able to keep in contact there, in a public way, which makes it interesting. (Part of the concept is what you will allow others to read or "hear", which will lead to my eventual point.)

After some time I started to follow a select few celebrities that interested me. So my use of Twitter had become threefold: 1) Tweet random thoughts; 2) maintain contact with a select few real-life acquaintances; and 3) keep current with events or celebrities that interest me.

In time I started learning how the whole of Twitter (call it the Twitterverse) interacts with one another. Subsequently I observed how hashtags were used to create community discussions. And therein lies what I enjoy the most about Twitter: Observing how people interact. To me Twitter is a virtual representation of how people truly interact in the real world.

At the risk of being labeled an infamous Fark racist, one of the most interesting observations is how black youth interact. (As properly labeled as a subgroup, or subgroup of another subgroup, by the article.)

To supplement what is alluded to in the article, think about my back story and reasons for creating my own Twitter account. I'm not going to expound upon black culture in America (or youth culture in general) here because I will leave that up to whomever, but here are a few of the facts about Twitter:

1. It's as simple to use as sending a text message to 40404. This can be done from the most menial type of mobile device.

2. We are an instant-information networking society dependent on mobile devices.

3. Twitter is a somewhat faceless social network not trumpeted by a wealthy white Ivy leaguer from New York who has had a movie made about his #whitepeopleproblems. (Sorry, I had to.)

I think Twitter is an outstanding study in cultural anthropology. If I am singling out young black culture on Twitter as my example, it's only because it seems to be an empowering tool for maintaining virtual community ties. There are other aspects of Twitter that are intriguing to observe with regard to the way people interact, but all I can really offer is... You should check it out.

/Does not work for Twitter
//Did, strangely, meet my girlfriend there

As far as I'm concerned, Twitter is a best-effort broadcast-addressed instant message. It's for "going to _____ next week, anyone interested?" messages. Best-effort works fine here, because you don't really care if no one sees it; if there was someone you did care about specifically, you addressed them through more direct channels. At the same time, it's less invasive to other people than if you had just sent out a mass e-mail every time you're bored. There's something to be said for letting the subscriber chose when to view the messages.

Twitter is essentially a cross between "AIM away messages: the site" and "so, you couldn't figure out RSS, huh?" It's so basic that it's flexible so people have found other uses for it as well: "Game server briefly down for maintenance tomorrow evening," "buy one get one free all day tomorrow," etc. Anything that falls into the category of I-could-live-without-knowing-it-but-might-be-interested-I-guess.
