My guess would be with the help of an eldritch abomination trapped in the Noctis Labyrinth?

We should get on this.

How will we give Mars a Van Allen belt so that everyone doesn't die of radiation poisoning?

2011-12-19 09:17:35 PM
Because we are so good at just maintaining this rock, lets plan on messing about with another one.

(snip) good old fashioned thermonuclear detonations ... yeah, those always work out nicely.

sigh

"Despite these promising circumstances, however, it's clear that one does not simply walk into terraforming Mars."

However, I hear that the one thing Mars needs is women.

Came for Kim Stanley Robinson, leaving satisfied. One of the best trilogies in existence. If you haven't read the books yet, you should.

All we have to do is melt the core and get it spinning or import gigatons of air.

It's THAT simple.

I did a report on mars terraformation back in High schoo. (gasp) 20 years ago.

Not any closer now than we were then. Still the stuff of science fiction. Though it occurs to me that the technological advances needed to terraform Mars, could also be utilized to solve climate and pollution issues we have here on Earth. Terraform Earth, as it were.

I'm sure i"ll be saying this again in another 20 years.

Best get our asses there then.

Without melting the core and creating a magnetic field, wouldn't any atmosphere were create there continually be blown away?

Mars does not have enough mass to retain a usable atmosphere.

well no, he trapped it in there and then put a guard on top of it.

now stop with the xenos heresy and report for your mind purge.

"Even with enough time, energy and material you can create a molten iron core again. Once the core has an induced spin, then a magnetic field will become very apparent. Add a large orbiting moon, and you can stabilize axial tilt. If nature can do it, so can we with a little math and engineering."

Uh huh, if we could engineer something like that, why are we farking with planets at all? We might as well start from scratch and build a death star to our specifications.

hey, its not my fault the emperor trapped it there with the plan of having it inspire technology for his empire and then went and got himself put on long term life support before he could finish building it.

THIS.

We've already f*cked u-p our allotment of planets. Let's just keep it to the one for now.

DRTFA, but spread some lichens or other self-repilcating machines on it and let them burp / fart oxygen and CO2, maybe steer a comet or two to either skip a few times onto the atmosphere or else slam straight down to thicken and warm things.

This is not impossible stuff, even with what we already have to work with. I personally will never see it. But so what? Some people think they'll live forever.

As mentioned. The key problem with Mars is a lack of an iron core to generate a magnetic field to deflect the solar wind. Without that, what atmosphere there is gets blown off and there's no protection from certain kinds of radiation. No amount of plant life will compensate for that.

I read an article years ago that indicated there's so much carbon dioxide in the crust of Mars, that oceans formed from terraformation would initially be carbonated (and not salty).

Oceans of club soda. THINK of the possibilities.

The Chinese already have a place with a toxic, unbreathable atmosphere. It's called Beijing.

Genius! You get moved up to the "B" ark.

2011-12-19 10:34:21 PM
It'll never happen. Mars doesn't have a strong magnetic field. Without a strong magnetosphere, the solar wind will break down and strip away lighter elements like water and oxygen. You'll be stuck with an atmosphere like that of Venus: mostly CO2 - too heavy to strip away and with atomic bonds too tight to break down.

OTOH, an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide would warm the planet significantly, as well as bringing atmospheric pressures way up. You might even be able to walk on the open surface with nothing more than a rebreather, although UV radiation might still be a problem during the day.

2011-12-19 10:50:28 PM
While exploring the Martian south pole, we'll find an ancient structure built by the long extinct Protheans. This structure will be full of the Prothean advanced techology. Some of which allows us to create a near-limitless energy source by affecting the mass. This will allow us to travel long distances in short periods of time and solves all our energy needs.

By using this energy we will be able to populate Mars and power CO2 machines there that will be used to terraform the Mars, as well as have hot sex with blue aliens with big tits.
