Perhaps they were dicktating...

Back in the day when the cheerleaders would paint their game banners my friends and I would sneak over while the paint was still wet and draw peni on the posters. Looking back, that wasn't very nice of us...

2011-12-19 06:19:13 PM
My best friend and I would do something like this. Well, actually, we would draw a picture of Big Bird saying "You are going to die."

I suppose it's not precisely the same thing, but still.

pictures or paintings of penises (penii?) aren't pornographic.

You telling me all those renaissance paintings of naked men and women with exposed naughty bits are pornographic? (The catholic church still painted over an uncounted number of them -- like the Mona Lisa -- after they swept across Europe destroying countless libraries full of information and imposing their religion on everyone.

We have cultures that lasted 100s of years- even 1000 years in some cases. They weren't nearly as hard up about sex as we are. In fact, they were quite open. WTF is our problem?

By denying or supressing/repressing people their most basic instincts we can control them all the better? Attach shame and fear of retribution (sin) to that and you have BINGO.

I get the general point of the graph (that being to piss of fundies) but why would the Christian dark ages inhibit technological developments in Asia, the Americas, the middle east or pretty much anyplace that wasn't Europe ?

Actually, the engineering during the "Christian Dark Ages" portion of the chart was far more advanced than the Renaissance. In fact, the Renaissance was a return to a more primitive form of building. For example: flying buttresses, huge windows, and groin vaults are waaaaay more technically complex than a plain rounded arch and thick walls.

I didn't say there weren't beautiful buildings. I said they don't need anywhere near the engineering complexity, which they don't.

What BlippityBleep is referring to is that Romanesque architecture tends to over-do the building requirements - the walls are way more massive than they need to be, the windows way smaller than they need to be to avoid compromising wall stability, etc., etc. Gothic improvements (flying buttress, pointed arch, etc.) allow for much thinner walls, bigger windows, etc., thus creating the "temple of light" feel of medieval cathedrals, because you are over-building much less. Renaissance architecture tended to go back to the rounded arch and downplay the buttress, so from an absolutist standpoint, they are simpler architecturally and engineering-wise. That being said, Renaissance buildings were often not trying to be the scyscrapers the Gothic cathedrals tried so hard to be, so the cutting-edge engineering wasn't necessary, either. That being said, something like Brunelleschi's Dome in Florence would have simply struck Gothic builders dumb with awe, so it was more of a shift in priorities instead of some massive engineering Downs Syndrome of the Renaissance.

All of this, but that wasn't the fault of the Dark Ages, that's the fault of all of humanity being dumbasses.

Moar with gothic architecture, here's a force diagram to show how such large spaces in between the walls are possible:

i42.tinypic.com

The pointed arch brings more down vertically, too, so the buttressing can become thinner. Renaissance and all rounded arches have much greater lateral thrust that requires pretty thick walls (and small windows because of the needed structure). In late gothic it became columns that fanned out in all directions to create an open column grid and huge open spaces, which is something not possible with strictly Classical building. But that doesn't mean the Renaissance wasn't freaking gorgeous though, it was great in it's own way.

/luvs this stuff
