I wonder what six CURRENT Boeing engineers could design with nothing but a slide rule and some balsa. And a pencil. I'll let them have a pencil.

Doctors and medics who tended to soldiers, of whom many such soldiers later ended up killing other people?
Monsters.

I work with an ex-B-52 navigator who flew during the cold war. He was telling me how he trained with the sexton and how the navigators now probably have no idea how to use one of those now days. Oh and how scary it is to fly a big plane like the B-52 low like they used to practice in case they needed to bomb the shiat out of Russia.

I'm not trolling. I'm just being honest about what he did. The man helped kill thousands of people, nearly all of whom were innocent and died for no reason other than they happened to live in the wrong place. He was less than shiat. The only sad thing about his death is that he lived to 94. I'm not going to cry over a mass murderer. Sorry.

Sextant.

Old planes had a window for the navigator to take measurements. Now if the end of civilization takes out the nav aids you're going to get lost and crash in the middle of nowhere, instead of finding a cratered airfield under a mushroom cloud and crashing there.

Correct. Every person who contributed to the the airplane, the car, the assembly line, the printed word, the laws of physics, the principles of mathematics, the written word, and language is a MASS MURDERER. Each of these things led to the mass slaughter of millions of lives and their potential offspring, and those that study it are personally responsible for whatever affect their invention has on the world.

Yeah, those are EXACTLY the same. Those other things were designed for purposes other than the deaths of thousands of human beings. The B-52 was designed to cause mass death. THAT'S IT. That is it's only real purpose. It wasn't designed to carry passengers or cargo. It was built solely to kill people. After reviewing the history of the B-52 and the role it has played in the US military engagements over the years, I am inclined to agree. I think that the role it played in the Cold War was an important one in that it acted as a deterrent toward the Soviets. Beyond that though, it has been used to basically kill people in a series of wars that we've been waging over the last few decades.

I'm a baffled that Fark enjoys condemning the military-industrial complex to such a high degree (to say nothing of condemning the Gulf War 1 and 2 wars and Vietnam), and yet is so willing to defend something like the B-52 and its creator(s). The B-52 is one of the great early and enduring successes of the same industry that is constantly vilified here day in and day out. If so many Farkers detest the relationship that military contractors like Boeing have with our government, why is El Freak such a horrible person for pointing out that the B-52 is a killing machine that did alot of killing in the service of a country who has been waging wars regularly since the inception of the bomber?

I can't speak for others, but I criticize the military-industrial complex due to the amount of money it uses and wastes. The B-52 is one of the most cost-effective programs ever. What the government does with the tool is another story, but I won't criticize it or its designer for it.

It is true. It was designed for nothing but killing. They flew the things by the thousands kamikaze directly into crowds of people.

El Freak speaks for me. The B-52 is one of the larger exames of the success of the military-industrial complex over American democracy, responsible for untold thousands of deaths, wasted money, and an exemplary example of the triumph of fear-based politics.

I will also shed no tears over this man's passing.

For my own part, I'm not a fan of the institutional behaviour of many defence companies - particularly as regards lobbying and how certain contracts are won; I also don't often seem to agree with decisions about when to use military force. I approved of Libya; I can't understand why under the same doctrine we're leaving Syria to twist in the wind.

However, putting politics to one side, I can appreciate an efficient machine. For all that the B-52 was an ugly farker, it did the job it was designed to do very well.

I personally don't think there's anything inconsistent in even the most anti-war activists appreciating that the designers did their job well.
