I don't think a $10 gift card is worth the heart attack and sinking feeling I have any time a cop car gets behind me with its lights on.

I get that they're trying to be nice, but damn.

BATF should be a convenience store, not a federal agency.

AGREED!!!!

And how convienent would it be that while that nice copper pulls over that good driving black man to give him a $10 GC but happens to "sense" that someone nevarious was going on and bam...car searched/harassed.

And I bet you still have to give license/reg/insurance.

FTA:
Even during the economic recession where local municipalities are cash-strapped, the Prosper PD saw value in this new program.

So cash strapped and handing out cash.

It would take a government worker to come up with this brilliant plan.

Cops in texas handing out cards? Shoot 'em. Troublemakers.

2011-12-19 12:06:16 PM
This was tried somewhere else a few years ago in the midwest I believe. The ACLU filed suit and got it shut down because basically the cops are pulling you over for no cause. Not doing something is no reason to stop and detain a citizen was the basic judgement.

The cops in the town I used to live would set up a "safe driving checkpoint" every now and then, and hand out keychains and "how to drive safely" books.

They would also hand out tickets if your inspection sticker was out of date, you weren't wearing a seatbelt, etc.

That said, they could have just set up an inspection sticker checkpoint and called it that, so its not like its super nefarious. Hell, at least if you were on the up and up, you got a keychain out of the deal.

What if some guy is driving very slowly and carefully because he's high? Does he still get the gift certificate? Do pot dealers take gift certificates these days?

Just a reason to stop your car and smell your breath. No thanks. Can I just wave and drive off?

How about doing cop type things. Like finding car thieves and burglars.

2011-12-19 12:10:28 PM
The police officers on foot have infiltrated school parking lots or other pick-up/drop-off zones where they can safely communicate with cars that are moving at slow speeds.

They need to spike strip these m'fers, then PIT maneuver them and then pepper spray, then present them with their starbucks gift card

2011-12-19 12:11:13 PM
This has been tried before. The problem is the cop seeing something illegal after the stop. He had no legal reason to make the initial stop.

They're using public funds to give away gifts for good behavior. That truly is tax-and-spend, a phrase that has often been assigned to liberals. You're a funny guy.

Hey, I know that joke!

Cop pulls over a car, walks up to the driver's window and says, "congratulations! Today you'll receive a $1,000 gift card for your great skill in driving! What do you think you're gonna do with that money?"

"I'll guess I can finally get a driver's license!"
"Oh, don't listen to him, Officer, he always babbles nonsense when he's drunk", the wife on the passenger seat pitches in.
"OMG OMG", wails the grandma from the backseat. "I knew we'd get into trouble with that stolen car!"
And a voice from the trunk: "¿Es esta America?"

Sounds like soshulizm to me.

2011-12-19 12:13:09 PM
And yes I realize the article said they are doing it "on foot". But I've been stopped by a cop on foot and even heard of speed traps with cops "on foot" just putting their hand up to make you stop. This is no different.

What do you think would happen if the cop put his hand up for you to stop to give you a $10GC and you just slowly rolled by and ignored him? CarChase.com would have new footage is what.

"You get 10% off your fine for every year you haven't had an infraction/ticket. No single ticket in 10 years? Then this speeding ticket won't cost you anything (within reason of course)"

This is frikking stupid and a waste of resources and cops time. I'd actually prefer the cops keep it for a raise or put it back in the coffers so they arent so gung-ho on making cash.

They TRIPLED the speeding ticket fines in my area over the past 12 months. 20mph over? $1500!

Nuno311: Cops don't give out warnings anymore...they need the cash.

I've got one written warning for doing a 100 in a 65, an oral warning for 55 in a 45 and a tail light out, and an oral warning for 42 in a 30 in the last few years. And one ticket for 89 in a 65. Granted I'm white and clean and that's just my own anecdotal evidence.

Think about it, why do cops hide to catch people speeding when the mere visual presents of a cop is a deterrent to speed? There's only money is catching you.

$10 is mighty cheap to pay for a good look inside your car without having probably cause to pull you over.

Do you know I didn't read it very well or proofread my post?

Still stand by what I said, Now they are able to sneak up on you. How do they know you were driving the speed limit if they are on foot?

"Well she obeyed the laws of physics coming in to the parking lot so she wouldn't farking flip over and explode."

myinternetname: $10 is mighty cheap to pay for a good look inside your car without having probably cause to pull you over.

This. It's a potentially illegal gimmick to pull in more revenue. A good lawyer could probably get you off on any charges though.

Cops are seriously close to being f*cking worthless. A friend of mine had her identity stolen recently and they (cops in both jurisdictions) won't do anything about it.

I realize it's a tough job dealing with shiat every day, but I've had very few good dealings with them. Best cop I met was a campus police cop in college after I got mugged.

ultraholland: It's not there job to congratulate and reward people for being normal. What a dumb waste of resources.

So, to reward me for allowing myself to be delayed for letting someone else into traffic and following the speed limit, I will be further delayed by a cop pulling me over?

New excuse for not pulling over for the cops: "I was driving legally, so a reasonable person would conclude this was one of those 'thank you' stops, but I was in a hurry and had no time for this that day, so I kept on driving".

This will be hilarious if the cop sees a bong on the front seat or something. I know, you should find a beer, drink it in front of him, and finish it and dispose of the container before you continue driving.

FTA: "The police officers on foot have infiltrated school parking lots or other pick-up/drop-off zones where they can safely communicate with cars that are moving at slow speeds."

That's awful nice of them, especially considering all the laws about drugs and weapons that significantly increase the penalty for bringing them near a school.

For the record I run a store that buys gold Jewelry. We see officers all the time trying to catch thieves. So simply because you are not in a position to see their work, doesn't mean they are doing nothing.

5 seconds after they implement such a policy: Nuno311 "that is f*cking stupid, why would you give people a license to break they law to reward them for not breaking the law?"

I'm pretty sure giving the cops permission to ignore crimes for certain people will be received splendidly by all the Texasphobes on here.

Ummm, that's what they are. "Protect and serve" and "for the people" are not only hokey bullshiat, but not even remotely true. The police work for the state and are designed to be enemies of the people. I am not knocking cops by saying that ... that's their job.

I like the style of President Saakashvili of Georgia (the country). Faced with rampant corruption of the traffic cops, he fired basically the entire 30,000 man traffic force. Oddly enough, the country did not collapse into lawless highway free-for-all.
