Avoid multi-tasking. "As a Baby Boomer, I was brought up to do one thing at a time and give people my undivided attention. When the salesperson allowed random customers to interrupt our conversation and also exchanged text messages with someone, I lost my train of thought, and lost confidence in him," said Volper.

Win with the right words. "As a former salesperson and head of sales at a Fortune 500 company, I know that how we say things to customers is as important as what we say," said Volper. "So I was not impressed - and I don't think my Baby Boomer peers would be, either - when this young salesperson.

And the article abruptly ends. Not unlike a boomer attention span.

Is "Make sure it farks over everybody else " a selling point they mention?

Meh, boomers are not generally over medicated with ADHD meds.

You can market a product to a demographic by appealing to their tastes. Special report at 11 from Ric Romero.

Seriously, go away, Boomers.

AS a boomer, I would like to add that I would vastly prefer NOT to be catered to in any of the ways described in TFA.
Sounds like a bunch of crap to me.

So the ads praise you for being hypocritical?

My favorite part was where he actually expected the salesperson to open the product right there and let him fiddle around with it, practically ensuring that it would be unsellable to anyone if he decided not to buy it.

And people wonder why babyboomers are thought of as self-entitled d-bags.

FTA: "'As a former salesperson and head of sales at a Fortune 500 company, I know that how we say things to customers is as important as what we say,' said Volper. 'So I was not impressed'"

"'[The sales person's] unwillingness to cut open the box signaled poor customer service to me.'"

Evidently he forgot that if your cost of sale exceeds the profit on a given item, you don't sell that item. You're not going to cut open a farking box on an $80 printer in the hopes of making a $4 profit on it.

Alzheimer's perhaps?

jayhawk88: Wow, that article actually does a very good job of articulating why I hate Baby Boomers.

Not all Boomers are entitled, but wherever I go it's increasingly obvious to me that almost every single facet of modern American society has been re-shaped to cater to Boomers for no other reason than the sheer magnitude of their numbers. Think it's a coincidence that health insurance gets all the political attention these days when education is just as dysfunctional? Heck, even product marketed at younger generations fear the wrath of the Boomers. Remember the public backlash over GTA and Mass Effect? Boomer butthurt over games they otherwise know nothing about. We're here, we're important and we're farking prudes, so we don't want anyone to have anything to do with anything we disapprove of.

How to sell to boomers: give them whatever they want and send the bill to their kids.

So...they're old, mentally declining and self important. Just like every other generation of senior citizens in the history of society.

Meh.

The difference is that they still run the country when back in the day, the productive members of society would find ways to get rid of their old people.

Which is progress, to be fair, but I do wish the Boomers well if they just stopped being so goddamn important. We're already paying for your retirement and health care; please stop meddling with our lives.

Very true, and subsequent elderly generations will suck too. The issue is that because of their sheer numbers, the rest of society has had to age with them, rather than moving forward without them the way every other generation was left behind. Younger generations aren't permitted to have their own culture because of the financial and political interest in catering to the massive Boomer audience.

How to sell to __________: Make it all about them.

Don Draper is too drunk to slap around whatever idiot decided this tactic was unique to baby boomers.

Old people accuse the young of being self centered, but to sell to them, we have to kiss their asses and use tongue? No farking way! Next, they will want a senior citizen discount. Why not a "Why aren't you dead yet?" surcharge. Young people with more obligations should not have to pay more.

can we divide the country into 2 areas - Boomers in one, everyone else in the other?

Boomers can get the southeast corner and a little more(since they like to be warm), so Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas and Texas. That is nine states and a large swatch of geography.

/after putting this list together I realized I gave them the SEC... 2 birds, one stone.

I'll tell you one thing, the aging Boomers have ruined PBS with a bunch of "Buy my book" bs masquerading as informational programs.

Although, given the massive amount of 60's music promos I've seen recently. I wonder (if PBS is still around) if when the children of the 80's and 90's are the main donators, that we'll see hairbands and Dr. Dre covers?

Baby boomers will ensure health care has jobs for the next 20 years.

But you won't get any health care. Sorry jr.

Build Rapport = Expend serious capital on well-trained and well-paid salespeople to pander to the customers who may or may not buy a damned thing.
High Touch over High Tech = Opening and repackaging products constantly for those who like to get their greasy fingers on something without buying it.
Listen to Needs = Ignore all of the advances of technology and information and, instead, pander.
Don't Multi-Task = Eh, unless you are GOING TO ABSOLUTELY BUY SOMETHING, you aren't special.
The 'Right' Words = Don't use current slang or vernacular, speak to someone as if they are still living in the 70's or 80's.

Seriously, Bob16, it's not a persecution complex to acknowledge the simple fact that an inordinate amount of attention is paid to these people's needs, wants and tastes strictly because there's so goddamned many of them. Pretending that this isn't the case makes you appear either dishonest or intentionally obtuse.

I am not a baby boomer... and I don't like it if some sales associate takes messages or answers other customers when dealing with me. Just the way it is. If I didn't want to buy something, I wouldn't be in store right? 10 times out of 10... people do business with people they Know, Like, and Trust. In that order, no exceptions. That will never change. These aren' t "boomer" specific things, this is the reality of sales. If someone from some other generation can't figure that out, they aren't going to make it out of retail.

hmmmmm.... I need to subset. So we split the country in half, one half more liberal, the other more conservative - split at the Mississippi.

From there we will need to see how many Boomers filter in to each area - whereas - the more conservative East Coast (yes they get the East) might need areas for Boomers in Florida, Miss, Georgia, Bama, Tenn, KY, SC, NC, VA, KY, IN, IL, WV and OH.

On the West Coast we just need to give them Phoenix, maybe Branson.

But you only get one shot to decide which side you are on - once you choose one you are now a Left American or a Right American - (then when all of the poor people who vote straight R tickets see that there are no longer social services for them we can just stand on the banks of the Mississippi and laugh)

Yeah like we'll be able to have our own kids once we're done serving the Boomer overlords and paying off the debts they passed on to us.

Nobody would give a rat's ass about this generation if it weren't for the perfect storm of the rise of this country post WW2, technology (communication in particular) and mass marketing. The last one is really the cause of the whole machine pointed at them.

Take this away and they are just another group of aging people.

Not Phoenix. Give them one of the outlying towns, like Sun City. Although it would be sort of funny to see the exurban retirees suddenly forced to live in Phoenix itself, which is half Los Angeles and half District 9.

Know what I find amusing.

The "early onset dementia" float at the last Macy's parade. With a bunch of smiling, but desperate for attention boomers on it.

They are dying. The f*ckers are finally dying! I cant wait!

/And, why are there erectile dysfunction drug commercials during kids shows?

The baby boomers are currently the only demographic with large amounts of money to spend and no desire so save it. It shouldn't be a surprised theyre being marketed to.

"So I was not impressed - and I don't think my Baby Boomer peers would be, either - when this young salesperson kept inserting the word 'like' into many of his sentences -- as in 'this printer is like the fastest we have."

And just whose generation infected our language with that idiom, champ?

Let me guess - the young salesperson had long hair and a by-God earring like a girl, too.

TFA reads like a Consumerist post.
