General Motors caused their bankruptcy. GM owns technology in Saab that they didn't want going to the Chinese.

And now the car industry has gone full retaard.

This. Like the Chinese couldn't have got their hands on that technology anyway. And like GM isn't happy to do business with the Chinese themselves....

Who needed them anyway? I was never enthusiastic about their cars. Sorry that some people in Sweden will now be out of work. But other than that good riddance.

New 9-3s are still listing for over $30k. Yeah, I don't think so, dealers. In 5 years those will be a biatch to find parts for.

Man, that is so bogus. I was hoping Saab had finally found the lifeline it need to restructure and retool itself to be competitive. Thanks, GM.

Seriously, the fact that they would essentially kick the barrel out from under Saab, even after they'd sold them, is just beyond disgusting. Like they don't do business in China already - they buy Buicks by the handful over there. I'm fairly certain they wouldn't have been threatened by allowing this deal to go through. But no, they had to get their automotive panties in a wad. ಠ_ಠ

That was my mother's; only drove it a few times, but man, was it fun to drive. And it was a BEAST in the snow. Expensive to fix when it did break, though. Finally met it's end when my sister hit a deer on Route 495(of course, this was after 1000+ had been dumped into it to fix the brakes she wrecked because she's oblivious to automotive maintenance.

That's what I'm worried about. I have a 2006 9-3. Runs great and I love it but I wonder if I should sell it before it breaks and can't be fixed.

Does bankruptcy mean liquidation, or does it mean they offload their pension plan to the government and restart with lower costs?

You will saab if you buy a Saab.

Piece of shiat cars.

Nah, they're being liquidated. It's the end of the production line for Saab.

3 similar looking cars, all outdated. Couldn't that be the more likely problem vs. blaming it on GM?

GM would be partially to blame for the lack of cash flow for product development over the last decade. Saab is the brand they forgot. They were too busy betting cash on Hummer like a bunch of idiots. Don't forget that GM went bankrupt too. They were just too large to die.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You're driving a car with what is really a GM powertrain, and that gen of 9-3 is still pretty common. You'll probably be able to find parts in junkyards and the like pretty easily for probably the next couple of decades or so.

Same goes for people that own the old 9-5. There's a lot of them out there, folks. This car was on the road almost unchanged for over 10 years. Parts availability isn't going to be a problem for the rest of the vehicle's practical life, and unless you happen to have an Aero in good condition I wouldn't bother trying to keep it for a future collectible.

The one I would stay away from though is the new 9-5, which is really painful for me to say, because DAMN is that an awesome car. There's not a lot of them out there, though, and there probably never will be. And since GM is under no obligation to provide warranty repair for the vehicle, considering it was only sold post GM/Saab split, you're pretty much screwed.

Which is a shame, because it really is a fine automobile.

Always wanted one (used, though; I would never buy one 'new') but EVERYTIME I was going to buy one something happened and none of the sales happened.

I finally decided that I wasn't meant to have one.

2011-12-19 06:43:10 PM
good riddance.

been there, broken down a few times, was denied loaner by the dealer (despite warranty), took months of repeat vists to fix problems.

reliability isn't a must in the premium segment, but poor customer treatment in inexcusable (and unforgivable)

I owned a 2000 9-3 until april this year. I traded it for a BMW 1 series. The Saab was a way better car on snow and ice.
Unfortunately Saab has been circling the drain for the last 10-15 years, so the end was not unexpected.

I currently have a 1990 900s hatchback. This news is sad, but not unexpected.

THIS.

My 2000 9-5 Turbo Aero 4cyl wagon has 172K miles and no major issue post warranty. The one problem was covered under waranty even though I was 100 miles over the limit.

People still think its a new car. It's clean and still sporty.

I have an 07 9-3.

Great car, fun to drive, great gas milage.

The problem becomes finding replacement parts.

Talked to a local import repair shop today and was awakened. Get in an accident, the only place to find a headlamp assembly, tail light or even a side marker is a junk yard. And those sources have dried up. I'm driving a car with 34k on the odometer that's worth 10k on a trade or about 40k in parts. Don't suggest i part it out, I'm not smart enough to do that. So, while I have a car that's in tact and drivable now, there is no future for body parts. Just for giggles, call a SAAB dealer and ask about the availability of an ignition assembly. It's not the cars, it's the replacement parts. Ask a Saturn owner about finding model specific parts, they are just as borked.

The Swedish pension system do not work that way!

It seems similar to what GM did to Pontiac. Oddly a US owned corporation doesn't look outside its own borders for sales figures. Pontiac outsold Chev up here, and GM canned it anyway.

\I now own my first non-GM vehicle and am ambivalent about it.

I absolutely love my badge-engineered Saabaru.

Less dickish looking than a WRX, lower insurance rates, and not so much on the cops' radar (as it were). Oh, and it's a mountain goat in on bad roads in the winter.
