Women already have this. They can remember the tiniest thing you said six months ago and use it against you.

I'm sure suppressing a major immune system protein that exists as a result of millions of years of evolution the function of which we don't understand and then radically altering the performance of our brains could not possibly have any unintended consequences.

I have a pretty awesome memory already. I wish I can flip open the top of my head and use an ice cream scoop on myself so I can forget the things that keep me up all night long.

If only there were a magical liquid that could erase bad memories....

2011-12-19 02:08:34 AM
I don't know that I'd want to remembjer everything. Not being able to forget the moment to moment minutia of the day would probably be maddening. But it would be nice to increase focused memory retention for things like studying and learning new languages.

As someone who has an extremely good memory, I can tell you it isn't always pleasant.

I remember almost everything I'm exposed to. Locations, exact phrases, the overall vibe, the weather and general time of day isolated events transpired, where people were standing or sitting, the lighting, etc. Nobody I know every knows what the hell I'm talking about....

Having Aspergers and being attention deficit, I have memory like swiss cheese. (And Alzheimers runs in my family...) I would welcome this.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who has an exceptionally good memory. And very glad to hear I'm not the only one who isn't exactly thrilled with that fact.

Sure, it makes people jealous a lot of the time. I'll go somewhere and 6 months or a year later still be able to remember where that awesome shop was I found or the little shortcut to the train station that saved 30 minutes. And yeah, I remember a lot of general facts so I hold up pretty damn well in a conversation.

The side that people don't see is that I also remember every time I made an ass of myself, every time something bad happens to me and that isn't always great.

/Really doesn't want a pill to help me remember the remaining stuff I do manage to forget

I have a fantastic memory when it comes to work events and can practically repeat a conversation verbatim if need be. But I have no memory of my childhood before the age of 12 except for one shot events. And they usually aren't very good memories.

No Limitless reference yet?

Anyways, I'm really curious if this is something that could be used to burn in memories during the usage of the drug(study time), or would you need to keep taking it to have easy access to what you learned?

Dinjiin: vossiewulf: I'm sure suppressing a major immune system protein that exists as a result of millions of years of evolution the function of which we don't understand and then radically altering the performance of our brains could not possibly have any unintended consequences.

For all we know, this how the brains of people with eidetic memory work.

What Wikipedia had mentioned was interesting:
With the questionable exception of Elizabeth (discussed above), as of 2008, no one claiming to have long-term eidetic memory has been able to prove this in scientific tests.[7] There are a number of individuals with extraordinary memory who have been labeled eidetickers, but many use mnemonics and other, non-eidetic memory enhancing exercises.

"Elizabeth" was basically a fraud. All the claims were based on her future husband's tests and she refused to demonstrate these abilities to anyone else. Ahhhhh.... no. We've heard this one before.

Furthermore:
Further evidence on this skepticism towards the existence of eidetic memories is given by a non-scientific event: The World Memory Championships. This annual competition in different memory disciplines is nearly totally based on visual tasks (9 out of 10 events are displayed visually, the tenth event is presented by audio). Since the champions can win lucrative prizes (the total prize money for the World Memory Championships 2010 is US$90,000), it should attract people who can beat those tests easily by reproducing visual images of the presented material during the recall. But, indeed, not a single memory champion has ever (the event has taken place since 1990) reported to have an eidetic memory. Instead, without a single exception, all winners name themselves mnemonists (see below) and rely on using mnemonic strategies, mostly the method of loci.[citation needed]

So, basically they're saying that a lot of exceptional claims are bunk, or at least exaggerated. Not that some people don't have phenomenally effective memory past what you and I can do, but that it's not nearly as absolute as sometimes claimed, esp not in the long term.

Nobody remembers every detail of everything in their field of view, and many cases are about intentionally trying to memorize details on queue, as opposed to "everything I ever experienced". Like I say, remarkable shiat is still out there, the record for recalling PI is 67,890 digits. Somebody actually memorized 67,890 essentially random numbers in order.

Yea...it really isn't too great at all. I'd give it up if I could. It's also super fun making references that no one gets even though they were involved in whatever you're referencing, or saw the exact same movie/show. And then feeling dumb having to explain that "Yes, four months ago this happened to all of us. You were there too."

I take a medicine (Topamax) for vestibular migraine; which works great but one of the side effects is memory loss and trouble with word recall. The new treatment might be a nice idea, but I'm sure it wouldn't be selectve, either. It would be like sensory overload.
