Bonnie Hammer in Hell? She would just take over programming down there, rename the place, and manage to alienate the original target audience entirely. However, the new target audience would flock there in droves for "Mega Goat-faced Demon vs. Cthulhupus" and "Living Person Hunters".

I used to watch Sci-Fi for re-runs of The Incredible Hulk, Quantum Leap, and The X-Files. I think we all know how that turned out, not to mention most of that material being available for streaming online.

She's a businesswoman, not an artist: she renews shows that make a profit, and cancels shows that don't.

It just so happens that what makes a profit is cheaply-made horseshiat that appeals to the lowest common denominator. That's the audiences' fault, not hers.

She's not worried about hell, she's run the syfyilis channel.

The Devil: They didn't tell me about you. Come on in, I'll give you the tour anyway, there won't be any surprises here for you though, but I'll show you around. Here's where we torment the soul.Whoooooah! But if you ran Syfy, there's not very much I can scare you with down here, you've seen it.. What's that? You ran E! Entertainment too!? Would you like a job down here?

I don't think I've watched that channel since that 'Tin Man' movie with Zooey as Dorothy. And they had the same annoying ad twice per commercial break.. something car or truck related..

Not every show has to be The Wire or Six Feet Under, every show on USA is entertaining and not reality crap, which puts them ahead of 99% of everything else on TV.

USA programming is pretty good really. And even when it isn't it doesn't take itself too seriously. Fun shows, maybe not great, but fun.

/People who watch reality TV are the reason it sucks dude

Ah, I remember the glory days of cable, when SciFi played actual science fiction, and the History Channel had shows about...history.

But now we live in the age of reality TV, where vapid idiots reign supreme. It's no wonder more and more people are switching to content streamed over the web, so they can avoid the crap.

Some of us had Sci-Fi at two strikes before Bonnie Hammer ever showed up.

It was her predecessor who canceled MST3K, and then canceled Sliders, even though Sliders was the #2 rated show on the Sci-Fi network (just behind Farscape). They set Sliders up to fail, and still canceled it when it succeeded without Jerry O'Connell, all so they could air a bunch of shows no one even remembers now.

So, Sci-Fi was going to shiat, original show-wise, before Bonnie Hammer even showed up. She just drove the final nails into the coffin.

FirstNationalBastard: Some of us had Sci-Fi at two strikes before Bonnie Hammer ever showed up.

Eh, I didn't have cable TV between the years of 1997-two months ago for various reasons and getting my sci-fi fix via syndication, so during that decade or so for me Sci-Fi wasn't even really at bat. Though, seasons 6-8 of SG-1 kind of had a black mark since the show was really long in the tooth during those years despite its handful of shining moments. I never even gave Atlantis more than a sideways glance until I sat down and caught fully up on Stargate via Netflix.

I never actually got into Sliders, and I really rued my lack of MST3K so the loss of that show was relatively blunted for me.

FirstNationalBastard: It was her predecessor who canceled MST3K

Q: Why did Sci-Fi Channel officials decide to stop ordering episodes?
A: Initially, network executives said the issue was ratings, pure and simple. Later, they also noted that the cost of acquiring the rights to movies for riffing was getting too high. Many viewers also noticed a change in the network after Barry Schulman -- MST3K's chief defender at the channel -- departed, and Bonnie Hammer -- an executive from what was then Sci-Fi's parent company, USA Networks -- took over. MST3K apparently did not fit with her vision for the network.

If I recall correctly she also took over Comedy Central prior to the first cancellation.

I apologize. I got my dates wrong. I was under the impression she took over Sci-Fi in 2001.

So, she's always been the reason Sci-Fi shows were canceled or turned to shiat. Well then, I suppose that's what happens when you let someone who knows nothing about, and most likely hates, Science Fiction run the Sci-Fi channel.

/of course MST3K didn't fit with her vision of what the network should be... people enjoyed MST3K.

Don't forget the part where the network told the cast and crew right after season 4 was essentially finished.

God, do I hate it when people attribute success to someone who essentially got lucky. We had the same thing at my business where the golden child gets credit despite their decisions.

Yea, Taken would have completely sucked if it wasn't for her. Oh, the fact that it had Steven Speilberg, a reknowned filmmaker making it, and an interesting story had nothing to do with it. It was all her and that one casting choice.

This is why the traditional idea of a channel MUST die and direct production come into power.

Farscape was replaced by "Tremors: The Series" if I recall correctly. Which I might not, because I was so ticked off by the cancellation of Farscape that all I remember was some sort of frelling red rage before my eyes for a few months. "Yeah, um, Farscape is too expensive now, so fark it, we'll cancel the #1 rated thing we've got going for us." Didn't help that they also played around with the schedule for Farscape too, not as bad as Whedon got frelled over, but still "hey let's air three episodes and then take a couple months off!"

They had a lock on a demographic (nerds) that by definition falls all over itself for show-related merchandise, not to mention targeted advertising for other nerd-related stuff, and they did to it what Rygel does in this scene. (pops)

Mrbogey: This is why the traditional idea of a channel MUST die and direct production come into power.

Even though production costs have dropped considerably, you're very limited in what you can do with direct production. You need someone with money to bankroll the operation. This isn't going to change, although you will see smaller studios forming up. Art is a product, and that means production costs, distribution costs, and the hope of income. Rarely, you'll get an artist that already made their money in the traditional system breaking out of it- because they've got the cash to put up for it. Louis CK's recent experiment comes to mind.

Sci-Fi had also just acquired full rights to Stargate SG1, which made it much more attractive than Farscape, which is owned by the Jim Henson Conmpant. Throw in a contract with a low ratings escape clause, and you've got the perfect way to kill an unwanted show by messing with its schedule.

Bottom line is what matters most. The lovely Bonnie Hammer (power and money make any woman look hotter) has made the bottom line increase.

In theory there could be a Syfy 2 with the shows aired on late 1990s Sci-Fi, but that sounds like most fans of those shows would be wanting to watch it online (with a correspondingly lower cost). Maybe cable providers can produce an Online Pack of channels like Syfy 2, ESPN 3-8, TV Land Actual Shows, etc., of lower-cost but less profitable content. Well, ESPN 3-8 would cost lots of money. But you get the point.
