A bit of that and mostly it's that an outside force cannot set up a government that will last. The have to hash it out on their own, for better or worse. Anything the US does would be postponing an inevitable upheaval.

Same goes with Egypt and Libya, those place are going to be a mess for years. The middle east isn't a place the US will find allies, we need to get over the idea of winning hearts and minds and somehow get away from needing their oil.

Many of us here saw it coming before the invasion. Shia vs Sunni vs Kurds.

Historically, we are good at getting rid of dictators, not so good at replacing them with a better option.

Not our problem anymore, and if Iraq is smart they'll KEEP it that way.

2011-12-18 10:57:25 PM
And no USA troops should have ever been there in the first place.

Way to go, Bush. But it's OK, because you killed the guy that embarrassed your father and his friends. Real noble of ya.

Tell that to the 17,000 people at the US Embassy. I predict a major attack on it before the end of the year, probably on Xmas.

A lot of the Iraqi oil field development contracts were sold to Chinese and Russian firms.

Thank you for spelling the acronym correctly.

So the US is to play World Police for every shiathole that exists? Then we should just go to Africa and take over half the continent.

Unfortunately, I suspect that within the next few years, we'll establish that I've FTFY.

I have a great plan: close the embassy, leave them our phone number, and tell them to call once they've got things sorted out.

No, I think that white people putting multiple ethnic groups in the same arbitrary national boundaries will work this time. There's no way this could turn into an eternal war.

I think honestly you have to go with Ripley on this one. Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

As long as alternative energy costs 100s of billions more we'll be willing to spend trillions and sacrifice the environment for oil.

Subby sounds serious.

If done right, I think an arab version of the Marshall Plan would be the best thing for that region and the world.

2011-12-18 11:26:45 PM
Well, considering the country is now in Iran's sphere of influence it's obviously up to them to impartially keep the peace between the Shia and Sunni. Personally I'd vote for preemptively relocating all the Sunnis to traditional reservations in Jerusalem and surrounding environs.

Now, let's not be hasty. Just because you have three groups who viciously hate each other stuck in a small area with no real governmental stability or control doesn't mean they'll go out and shoot each other all to death.

Yup, it'll be a cakewalk, they'll greet each other with flowers, and they'll be building Fuddruckers and buying Ikea furniture within six months.

The US is like a reset button for dictators. But the people playing the game just end up sucking again. Coming to the PSN and Xbox live soon...
