The article says she has "mild learning difficulties". That could cover a number of things from being borderline mentally handicapped, having dyslexia, etc.

None of those preclude her being a responsible parent, not to mention they were trying to take away the baby from his biological father too. I see nothing in the article saying he was unfit to raise his child.

I wish this was somewhere other than the Daily Fail. I would really like to get my rant on, but alas, I am calling shenanigans on this story.

I've read about this young woman in the past in other, more reliable publications. In this case, despite being in the Daily Fail, the story is legit.

Neither do half the married couples that wind up getting divorced. Till Death do you part!!!!!

Learning difficulties and being stupid are completely different things. I have an IQ is almost the genius range, yet I have learning difficulties. It was hell in school because they taught by memorization and I can't memorize "random/numerical data" rapidly. I had to have a concept before I had a word to describe it, I learned slow but always passed the semester. I aced the sciences, because once I had a concept I understood it and often learned details of it most people would miss. I work with brilliant engineers who can't spell. I work with people who can come up with the most awesome and intricate wiring diagrams, data flow charts, and general equipment data-flow designs you can imagine yet severely hose things up when it comes to figuring out how to physically install the stuff in a cabinet.

I don't think stupid people should be breeding, but I don't have enough data to dismiss this gal as stupid.

If the Daily Mail has a picture of the couple complaining about treatment, I'm sure they've reported the story completely fairly. I'm also sure they received no fee for this either. I especially like how there's no corroboration that any of the facts in this are true.

I love it how Americans read Daily Mail articles and base their opinion of the UK off of it.

/Thinks the Daily Mail is a propaganda rag that would spoil the taste of the fish and chips that it wraps.

This was happening in America 100 years ago. A tenet of Progressivism was preservation of the quality of the breeding pool by excluding the mentally unfit, which lead to the sterilization of many young women who scored poorly on the new IQ test.

No one is trustworthy enough to be given the power to decide who is and isn't allowed to have children. I don't care how incapable the parents seem. Let them have the kid, keep tabs on them, and if they're harming the child THEN take the child away. I understand the impulse to try and head off future problems, but I don't believe in punishing people for stuff they *might* get wrong in the future.

Subby's an asshole who either didn't read his/her OWN article, or, is just and asshole.

"Learning difficulties" is not the same as "unfit parent."

2011-12-18 11:53:36 PM
Also note that the lady was raised in social care - this means that unlike normal kids, she's probably had a psych evaluation every 6 months her entire life. It is my firm belief that practically ANYONE who goes through one of those will be flagged as having some "mild learning difficult", in her case it's probably "didn't do well at school because other kids pick on the kid in social care".

She's intelligent enough to string together rational sentences, not drool when someone's taking a photo, and has a supportive husband? Leave her ALONE.

/ And as many have pointed out, Subby, Dunfermline is not in England.
// Sadly this outrage occurred here in Scotland. I feel ashamed.

i disagree. it is for the common good of mankind that defectives be sterilized. eugenics is good sound science that should be applied.

there are 7 billion on the planet as it is. being responsible stewards to the blessings of nature is way overdue. mankind as a whole has done a grand job of mucking things up around most of the globe. there is just so much clean air and clean water and in some areas it no longer exists, they already recycle toilet waste.

people shouldn't have to be born with mental and/or physical defects. it is an unfair burden for them or others to carry. being mentally ill doesn't mean you have a low IQ. people are unkind to people and things they fear or don't understand.

in the usa one must learn and pass qualifying tests to drive a motor vehicle on public thoroughfares, sell real estate or cut hair. yet we let any and every person that is able to do the horizontal boogie do so without having to be responsible for the results. that is horrible neglect on the part of those willing and able to to create and raise good productive citizens.

we live with war as a constant, crime/murder, placing people in jail for their life or executing them. we play God seven days a week. making sure we are breeding good stock is logical, productive and healthy. sound sane adults are competent to oversee such things.

not trolling, just my opinion, as unpopular as it may be.

I for one am glad that social workers have been given carte blanche to decide which of us ought to have our children kidnapped by the State for their own good, since it is well known that social workers are miraculously free of the prejudices and limitations that afflict other, lesser human beings. --Besides, if any doubt ever remains as to the wisdom of their actions we can always reassure ourselves that all is well by repeatedly saying that it can't possibly be true if it was mentioned in the "Daily Fail". This mantra saves us from actually having to examine the facts of the particular case in question, which God knows would be very tiring and boring and inconvenient.

Ask about the Eugenics Board of North Carolina. See how well that worked out.

Foster care wasn't begun to save the kids. It was begun to furnish unpaid help to the well-to-do. It was far cheaper than an orphanage.

Kids, if they live past being pawns for everyone they might make it.

This was happening THIRTY years ago. Oregon performed the last legal forcible sterilization in 1981. Over 65,000 people were sterilized (Numbers are unknown due to poor record keeping and an abundance of illegal sterilizations without consent) most of which took place in California. Women, blacks, and amerindians were disproportionately targeted. The American Eugenics experiment was seen as a positive example by Nazi Germany, including Josef Mengele who was personally financed by the pro-eugenic Rockafeller Foundation.
