Someone's campaign finances were dying out with the older conservative vote so you gotta go where the money is, the under 40 vote.

Pandering politician is pandering.

Better late than never, but could you get on correcting your mistake that you've place on me through law as soon as possible? I would really like to actually be able to spend more than 4 weeks a year with my foreign partner. Thanks.

We're getting closed. I'd be shocked if marriage equality under federal law wasn't achieved within the next five years.

Anyone who stands against this is going to find themselves occupying a pretty unappealing place in history.

I suspect that it is not going to be done by Federal Law, but rather by the courts. Which is perhaps why so many folks are looking at "activist judges" because they realize that laws limiting marriage, are going to fail Constitutional challenge.

Eventually.

I'm going to agree with you here. Exactly why the douchebag Gingrich is talking about imprisoning judges he doesn't agree with.

What is culturally acceptable to the majority of Americans is changing. Any politician that doesn't recognize this simple fact will find himself/herself voted out of a job in the next few elections. Some are choosing to make a scene and will go down kicking and screaming, others will choose to quietly retire from politics. On the other hand it shows real character to stand up in public and say "I was wrong." We need more like him leading the country.

I would love it if my home state were to get gay marriage soon. But what would be even better is if gays nationwide were able to have it.

That will happen soon, God willing.

Yes. He should resign and let the Republican governor of his state appoint a right wing person to replace him. That will be a good step toward equal rights!

Or, you know, what you said could just be dumb.

What I wish existed was some sort of hall of fame for people on the wrong side of history. As it stands right now, they can pout and whine all they want about slavery, suffrage, segregation, sexual preference, etc. without any worry of their legacy being tarnished. Strom Thurmond will forever be in the history books as a senator, but he also should be enshrined in this Wrong Side of History Hall of Fame. If people knew their grandchildren would one day be looking them up as a blight upon society, maybe they would think twice before being such asshats.

Sad that the hero tag is warranted for realizing something anyone with more than a dozen functioning brain cells can figure out in 10 seconds. "Do citizens deserve equal treatment under the law regardless of sexuality? Yes. Okay, on to thinking about something more complicated, like whether I want to wear the blue shirt or the green shirt today."

I'm hoping that the courts will soon at least throw out the parts of DOMA that block the federal level discrimination against legally married same-sex couples of the federal rights/benefits that come with marriage. It's one thing to say that one state doesn't have to recognize another state's contracts which the Constitution throws in language that makes it a little gray on as it sort of sounds like Congress can do that. It's another to say that a legally married straight guy in Indiana has federal legal protections and privileges that a legally married gay guy in New York is denied by the federal government. That seems like a major constitutional issue, and I hope that gets fixed sooner rather than later. I really don't want to have to wait another 5 or 10 years. A straight person wouldn't have to wait longer than it takes to get a fiancee visa.

His example is a quick way to get an old person, who has been in and out of the hospital, to shut up. How would you feel if the person you love and trust wasn't allowed to visit you in the hospital? Wasn't allowed to give you his insurance benefits, wasn't allowed to select end of life care, and wasn't given the fruits of your work after you died?

I don't think so. There is no election that is forcing him to make this statement. There is no pressure for him to have changed his mind. It appears to be a heartfelt statement.

Yes, about which I am very happy. However, it's probably going to have to go through SCOTUS before anything actually changes.

I voted for the Michigan state ban on same sex marriage

I was wrong when I did so. It took Terri Shaivo to make me see the error in my thinking.

I heard "Marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman" until I saw what they meant was "Marriage is between 1 man, 1 woman, her parents and the Florida Supreme Court."

I am very sorry

Considering that nearly all of the states that recognize same-sex marriages are in the 1st and 2d Circuits, the upcoming decisions in Gill (1st cir) and Peterson (conn dist -> 2d cir if appealed) will be pretty damn determinative for the largest # of people affected by this aspect of DOMA.
