To be fair, the only people using chatrooms anymore are pathetic 40-year-olds pretending to be 13 year-old girls, thinking they're doing good, and cops pretending to be 13-year-old girls, Oh, and the dumb pedos who haven't learned about texting and facebook.

Haspel admitted that from December 2009 to May 2010, he talked online with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old-girl

In what way is pretending to be a 13 year old girl for 6 months not entrapment?

I don't even know what side to be on here. They're both farking pigs.

BurnShrike: In what way is pretending to be a 13 year old girl for 6 months not entrapment?

from wiki:
it isn't entrapment when a person is ready and willing to break the law and the government agents merely provide what appears to be a favorable opportunity for the person to commit the crime.

As the saying goes "I'm OK with this". If it were entrapment, I'd be perfectly fine within them changing the law to make it perfectly legal, anything that makes it easier to catch pedophiles.

This is why I meet all my 13-yr-old girls the old-fashioned way, at the mall.

Eh, I mean... sure glad they got this predator off the streets.... yeah, that's what I mean.

Then I'm quite pleased that you're not in charge of things.

I can't believe how many times I have to trot this quote out, but:
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I'm not sure what that has to do with it, or are you saying that trolling for sex from children is an essential liberty?

The essential liberty is to keep cops from being able to entrap citizens. This applies to all citizens and all crimes. Just because pedophilia is repugnant doesn't mean we should remove the limits on police officers, opening the window for less liberty for ALL.

Wait a second, so it is NOT entrapment if the person being baited is willing to commit a crime? What if the person is not willing to commit the crime, but you're trying to make him commit crime, what is that called? How long can you try to make someone commit crime?

What if there's a big fat 6'5" dude who walks up to you and says "I'm a sexy 13 year old girl, let's have sex!" and you say no and he still bugs you everyday saying the same lines until you say "YES!!!" just to make him go away, but in fact he's a cop who just wants to fulfill some quota or whatever at your expense? Is this entrapment or what?

In my personal opinion, before you can even try to trap/catch someone doing a crime by baiting him with stuff, you should have a god damn good reason and evidence before you even begin. I don't care if this will raise the statistics of caught pedophiles or whatever type of criminal you've got, but baiting and trapping people into doing something bad is something I'd call harassment. It might even lead to innocent people getting involved in something they would never even dare venture into just because they're already getting annoyed and decided to play along!

Right, because innocent people log into the same chat room and look for the same 13 year old girl for months on end all while trying to get nude photos from her.

I've been on the net since the days of 14.4 modems - and even back then (and only being about 10 years old) I knew that all the girls on the internet were actually dudes. Nothing has changed.

I could google search for 2 seconds and find a picture of a girl that LOOKS like she's under 18 - hop in a chat room and start emailing it out, it's pretty sad that even when no crime is committed you can still get your entire life ruined.

Both cops in the story are idiots -- and he's going to have one helluva time in prison. A cop AND a pedo? oh boy.

I don't think the cops sent him a letter asking him to join the chat group. Also, you are assuming that the police officer was the one who started the sexual conversation, you do not know that for certain. The chat logs will be presented in court and it'll be up to the jury to decide whether it's entrapment or not.

I am one of those civil right crazies who thinks that training an external group (perverted justice), to induce morally questionable men to 'have a seat over there', then be arrested by police is crossing the line.

In one situation the emoticons were left out of chat logs in court records. In another situation I would swear I saw the alleged perp call BS on the perverted justice sting logs, and encouraged the alleged pervert to join into the conversation more than once.

/Where ever there is a law and police looking to find people breaking it, the line will eventally be crossed.

Is assumed dudeship a viable defense?

I don't understand how it couldn't be. Who actually believes 13 year old girls are sending nude pics to old men?

Police: "Haha! We caught you, pedo!"
Dude: "Um, no. I just assumed you were a 40 year old dude impersonating a 13 year old girl and you were going to send me some titty pics of your sister."

Not guilty.

Back when chat was still the thing to do, I used to message every person claiming to be an underage girl and talk to them as if I knew they were a police officer. I just know that I had to be right about at least one of them.
