FriarReb98: The Evil Dead, Sam Raimi, 1981

Should be Evil Dead III

2011-12-18 07:19:38 PM

FirstNationalBastard: I thought it was more of a clan film.

Hey, not just those guys like it, you know. White nationalists, skinheads, neo-Nazis, the list goes on. That movie's a lot more popular than you think it is!

The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson, 2001-3

A trilogy with a Box office gross of nearly THREE BILLION DOLLARS and SEVENTEEN Academy Awards is a "Cult" film??

There's your List Fail right there.

2011-12-18 07:20:50 PM
Yeah...the list seems to equally ascribe cult status to "true" cult films, e.g. The Room, which are well outside the mainstream but maintain a dedicated following, and those that have become part of established film culture, quotes or revenges to which have achieved a place in the vernacular (Wizard of Oz, Wonderful Life, etc).

Oh, and my add: Ed and His Dead Mother, although I may be the only one in that cult.

2001? LOTR? Casablanca?
"cult film" - you keep using that expression. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Folks complaining that Star Wars, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Fight Club or whatever shouldn't be on the list because of the number of fans that they have are barking up the wrong tree.

A cult film is any film that has a devoted and obsessive group of fans, not any film that isn't generally well known or popular that has a couple of people that like it. Nor is whether it was a box office success or failure and indication of it's cult status.

We can all argue over whether or not something should qualify for the "Top" 100, but I think that they're pretty on base about the cult status of the films on the list.

Also, Withnail and I is on the list so I'm satisfied.

If the film was nominated for an Oscar for best picture...not a cult film. If it actually won the Oscar for best picture, there is no farking way it's a cult film.

Kurmudgeon: GAT_00: Didn't get past the first listing. 2001 is not a cult film.

Seriously, if there is any film in the world that says "cult film" it's Star Wars. People eat, breathe and shiat Star Wars. I freaking went to the theater 18 times when it was released. Not because of how popular or successful it was, but because I was an avid fan of the film and so was every other kid in our neighborhood, but many people didn't understand our fanatic devotion to it.

I say again: Cult status is about how obsessive their fan base is; not about whether or not there are a lot of fans or a little. If people are judging cult status on whether or not a movie had a lot of people saw or liked it then many flops could be a cult movie because there's bound to be someone out there who likes it. Obviously that's not the case, because I'm not likely to have someone come up to me at DragonCon dressed up as their favorite character from Ishtar.

I didn't see Freaks on there. No Basket Case? That movie was pretty big in the high school I went to.

I'm pretty drunk so I might have missed it, perhaps it's not considered cult but I would think Pink Floyd The Wall would be a big cult hit. Or does rock movies not count?

I am guilty of many of those films.
I find the lack of Victor/Victoria, Kinky Boots, Little shop of horrors, The last man on Earth, Santa Vs. The Martians, Days if the Triffids......

disturbing

I know there's something on this list that would be perfect for me to watch tonight, but I can see that many of them are terrible movies that are fun to talk about but no fun to watch.

thattitanguy: Seriously, if there is any film in the world that says "cult film" it's Star Wars. People eat, breathe and shiat Star Wars... I say again: Cult status is about how obsessive their fan base is; not about whether or not there are a lot of fans or a little.

Not every religion is a cult. Cult means marginal. People think Star Wars and Star Trek fans are a little weird and obsessive, but they're normal weird, just like believing Jesus rose from the dead is normal weird. To be cult, you have to be weird weird, like believing in body thetans.

Wait a minute, no Heavy Metal? I can remember back in the 80's as a kid, this was the movie to see. It had a huge cult following back in the day.

Am I the only person on earth who thinks Lucio Fulci made absolute and complete crap from start to finish? Every single movie of his I've ever seen I've thought "boy, if it weren't for the gore there'd be nothing here at all". I'll grant you I haven't seen the one on the list, but given all his other garbage....

2011-12-18 08:14:39 PM
Many good ones already listed. And the inclusion of films that have made hundreds of millions of dollars on this list makes the whole thing ridiculous.

Bride of the Atom and Night of the Lepus for the win.

I spit on your grave

Born losers.

Inferno [desert heat]

Le Bossu (new window)

FirstNationalBastard: GAT_00: Didn't get past the first listing. 2001 is not a cult film.

IOverrated, yes. Cult? No.

Other questionable "cult" films?

Bride of Frankenstein, Casablanca, Dirty Dancing, Fight Club, Godzilla, It's A Wonderful Life... STAR WARS?! THE WIZARD OF OZ?!?!?

Okay, you know what, over half this list seems to be mainstream and popular films. Where's the cult films? Where's UHF? Where's Head? Where's Cannibal: The Musical or Orgazmo? Those are cult films, not THE WIZARD OF FARKING OZ!

Please tell me Gone with the Wind, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Citizen Kane and Casablanca are on this list of "cult" movies
