I may or may not be repainting my house soon, after reading this.

The heck with sticking it to the man, this would be a godsend in the third world even at low efficiencies. Stretch a sheet of light, easily-transported conductive plastic over your roof and you've got enough power to run cheap LED lamps and radios.

Find a way to "paint" roads and freeways with this stuff and we're set. Anything that can take a dollar out of PG&E's pocket is cool with me.

If everything is right with the universe, you will do both.

Normally I am cynical about the potential of these kinds of advances, but in the case of painted walls, we're already achieving 0% power-generating efficiency.

I also have a friend who has shown me a 'graetzel cell', (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dye-sensitized_solar_cell) which is either similar to, or is, what the article is talking about. Graetzel cells are very cheap, but inefficient compared to regular PV cells. Both graetzel and this tech use TiO2, a very common chemical used widely in things like white paint.

And since we're talking about large expanses of walls that don't do much other than to insulate, getting some electrical generation just sounds like a win-win.

What if I have three boats? Do they make a three boat version?

Sounds promising, but:

"In our laboratories we have tested the performance for a few days to a week, and we find it stable as long as it is stored in the dark."

It's perfect for powering a spacecraft that will land on the sun at night.
