Thank you for opening up the Czech Republic (and the insanely hot women of Prague) to the West, Mr. Havel.

Citizens of the U.S. have difficulty understanding the difficulties faced by dissidents in the Soviet Union and its satellite states. It is hard for us to even comprehend the courage a man like Havel had.

He tried to impress that fact upon Obama, as well as the persistent threat Russia still poses--and our classy president gave him the cold shoulder for it.

I see what you did there.

/Reed's _Between Thought and Expression_ had a great interview of Havel by Reed, where Havel explains why they named their revolution after the Velvet Underground

Is there a chance they'll upgrade his condition if I glue myself to MSNBC?

I was there for a brief time in the summer of 1994, while the region was still trying to get on its feet. It is an amazing city and it was a great time to be there.

Sir Cumference the Flatulent: Thank you for opening up the Czech Republic (and the insanely hot women of Prague) to the West, Mr. Havel.

I told a travel agent at my job I was going to vacation in London. She asked why when I'd have a much better time in Prague and I'd get more for my money. Prague was the best vacation I've had. Great city and so much history there. The people who live there are hit or miss, I didn't think they are as surly as people say. If you go there, just be prepared to be nickled and dimed for a lot of stuff in the restaurants and never hail a cab from the street (most likely you'll get ripped off). Just call AAA Radio Taxi and arrange for a cab. I like to stay in Prague 5.

And yes the women are insanely hot there.

Hey I love Prague, last time I was there we went to a pub opening where their special was 1 koruna beers.. That was about 5 cents a beer... afterwards we went to u sudu for a night cap, bought a joint at the counter, smoked it down there and hooked up with two eastern european skanks - was a magical night.

Sadly its getting more and more expensive these days.

But most Americans still couldnt point out the Czech republic on a map (or, I am guessing, tell you what country Prague is located in).

Havel had more courage than Obama can imagine. Obama's snub of Havel is inexcusable. His apparent abandonment of the old Eastern Block to the vicissitudes of Putin's political whims is malevolently ignorant.

There's something odd about their adoration for foreign peacenik liberals while they spend so much time running down domestic ones as traitors, but that's your typical authoritarian mindset.

RIP Vaclav Havel, a genuine legend in his own time. Don't make 'em like him any more. Condolences to his family, please.
I forget if Nobel Peace Prizes may be given posthumously? If they may, then he should get one!
When we lived in Europe, courtesy of the US military, we couldn't go to Prague because then -- a lifetime ago -- it was still enclosed in The Evil Empire & we couldn't get travel clearance to go there. We were, however, able to go once to what's now St Petersburg again in Russia. Quite likely because it was on a cruise from Finland & the ship was our hotel.

Revanche: Maybe I'm one of those ignorant 'mericans', but he died of old age and this is worthy of a newsflash why?

"Maybe?"

If you aren't familiar, try googling "Vaclav Havel" or "Velvet Revolution." They're both right there in the farking headline. There's also a site called "Wikipedia" that, while certainly not completely reliable, can give you a basic understanding on many topics if you just read the intro of an article.

Seriously. What is it about Fark that makes people feel compelled to publish their ignorance rather than taking 30 seconds to farking educate themselves?

2011-12-18 10:48:22 AM
Bummer. I lived in Prague in 2003-2004, when I taught English for a year right after college. Absolutely the time of my life, and I loved learning about the CZ's history regarding communism, the velvet revolution, the plastic peoples of the universe, etc..

The Czech are a wonderful group of people, and when I was there, most of them spoke very fondly of Havel. If you've never been to Prague, you need to move it to the very top of your travel list.

Godspeed, kind sir.
