/That tard should have been biatched slapped over his idiotic (and wrong) grandstanding on that gay marriage debate.

The people up in arms over this stuff apparently have no farking clue how these fancy gizmo's use their magic rays to done workify.

5. What other data does your company receive that was collected by CIQ software? (Senator Franken specifies telephone numbers, contents of SMS and emails, URLs of websites users visit, contents of search queries, keystroke data and contact information from address books.)

Uhh, the carriers get all of this data anyways with or without "CarrierIQ" because they just happen to be the one to send and receive to you over those fancy towers via their invisible radio waves.

cruci fiction: Uhh, the carriers get all of this data anyways with or without "CarrierIQ" because they just happen to be the one to send and receive to you over those fancy towers via their invisible radio waves.

THAT. The carrier "carries" all the data across their network. They already know the contents of your texts, the location of your phone, and can listen in on your calls all the livelong day, should they decide to do so. In fact, they're farking REQUIRED to be able to do so by CALEA, and to hand off all that data on demand to "the man". Hell, they'll give it to them without a court order of any sort half the time. In fact, if you knew who and how to ask, once upon a time back about 3 years ago, even lowly gub-contractors such as myself could get a disturbing amount of data (like who you dialed and for how long) for the asking.

So, who's the corporate shill who submitted this?

Personally, I'm okay with an elected official acting within his jurisdiction to investigate what seemed to be a major violation of consumers rights, and forcing them to put their public statements under oath.

Now, I realize that this may make me a socialist in some quarters, but there it is, and so be it.

His grandstanding on the gay marriage debate was neither idiotic nor wrong. I've read that study that Franken and the other guy were talking about as well, and Franken is 100% correct. The study does not mention same-sex couples either for or against. The study had nothing to do with same sex couples. But, strictly speaking, the definition of "nuclear family" quoted by the right winger would include same sex couples, just like Franken says.

Note that Franken never claimed that any same sex couples were actually in the study, he just points out that the study does not make that distinction. This is 100% true, so I don't see how you can claim that he was wrong about this. You'd have better luck convincing me that my grass is red.

Al was a shiatty comedian, but is actually a decent senator. He actually takes the time to read up on the issues he's going to be asking people about. The best example I've seen is where some a-holes tried to alter someone elses research on how two-parent households raised better kids to mean that kids need mommies and daddies. Franken was able to call them on it because he had gotten in touch with the original researcher and asked him if he had differentiated between hetero and homo couples in his research - he hadn't.

Against a sea of other congressmen that tell you to pry their ignorance from their cold dead hands, the guy who does his homework seems pretty decent.

Political science majors have an understanding of how our government works and the value of a functional governmental structure. That's more than I can say for the vast majority of Tea Partiers and Fark Independents™.

If he voted for the SOPA, he doesn't care all that much about civil liberties. The same is doubly true of the NDAA.

This is all theater meant to distract us and keep us confused. Franken and Paul are both examples that "prove" our democracy works, even though they are simply useful tools for keeping the wool pulled over our eyes just a little longer. This is a pointless little sideshow that will only serve to make it look like someone is "sticking it" to the telecoms, but nothing of substance will change or happen.

Yes - but this is what troubles me: I am a layman, and don't regard myself to be even remotely competent to make law that governs the use of technologies now in use. But I have forgotten more than most of these legislators seem to know about these things - even the relatively hip ones like Franken.
And these guys are GOING to be making laws about technology.
I don't really have a solution to offer - I just wish they would call upon, and listen to, more real experts. It makes me nervous when I hear them arguing with and dismissing guys who know fifty times more than they do about the subject under discussion.

For the thousandth time:

1. Logging Keypresses =/= transmitting logs of keypresses. The program needs to know what your phone is doing in order to be effective.

2. Stop commenting on technical issues when your knowhow of the issue is the sum of a badly hashed youtube video that misrepresents the facts.

Usually, I'm all for Franken. The guy is spot-on in my eyes most of the time. His continued battering of this issue when the facts have not changed one iota is not only useless and idiotic, but can and will cost people jobs.

Those websites also log who accesses them and when and to get what. It's not like any cop can go on there and read his/her spouse's texts or call contents (something not usually available). The police log their use of the site. The organizations log police use of the sites. Uncalled use can be taken care of if a violation of privacy does in fact happen.
