Guy Ritchie was the single worst choice to direct a Holmes movie outside of Michael Bay, I just don't get why he got picked for it.
That being said, the title of best Holmes ever will firever be a tie:

I hope PBS is airing these again, because BBC America would just butcher them.

Great series! I'm glad to see it back.

Not like that shiatty movie that just had a sequel come out. Ugh, what garbage.

Well, I was referring more to their editing for content and timeslot constraints, and to add in commercials, but since you mention it...

With three more cases for BBC1's Sherlock to crack, we speak to the series' co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman

This name could only be more British if they threw crazy honorifics and titles into it. Sir Benedict Cumberbatch II, Lord-Regent of Middle Cumberton.

The show made me go and read a bunch of Sherlock Holmes stories and then rewatch the show so I could see the references again. I can not wait for the Hound of the Baskervilles ep. Probably one of the top 5 things I'm looking forward to on tv for 2012.

I don't know. The BBC Holmes was good but the Ritchie/Downey one was also pretty great. I'm kind of sad the critics are ripping into the sequel.

I would give the edge to BBC if they hadn't done that hilariously bad Chinese-triad episode. I'm not too taken with Cumberbatch, but it's always nice to see Martin Freeman get roles.

All of what you said was wrong apart from the bit about Martin Freeman. The only redeeming feature of the Ritchie version was Mark Strong, and they killed him off.

Uncouth American Sherlock? Sherlock Holmes is an addict, as per his British author.

\I love Sherlock Holmes. I wish there was new material to read. Some lady, whose name I sadly can't remember, revived Holmes from the dead and wrote a series of books from the point of view of his wife. The ones I read were pretty good, but goddamn the author had to give every friggin' detail about the damn story setting, to the point where it seemed like she was just dumping her research verbatim to let you know she knows what she is talking about. I finished two of her books, and they WERE good... but it got too laborious to wade through the descriptive portion to find the nuggets of plot. I'd still recommend them, but for the life of me I can't remember who wrote them. Still looking for more good Holmes in the style of the original author.

Morgan Freeman as Sherlock Holmes? The exposition would be exquisite. Too bad I am not literate enough to rewrite a quote in the voice of Morgan Freeman, but that would still be awesome.

Best Holmes since Jeremy Brett.
That being said, Brett has become the character for me, I see and hear him him when I read the stories.

/I also hear Johnny Depp when I read Fear and Loathing and I've started using Mitch Hedberg for the Jesus bits in the New Testament

my pleasure!

I love her books- I have read all the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series- some of them two or three times. O Jerusalem is probably my favourite. She also has a series of contemporary stories set in San Francisco, with a police detective named Kate Martinelli, and she has about half a dozen 'stand alone' books, as well.

Could've been worse. But The original Doyle stories were full of cliches too, so I wasn't surprised to see some more rolled out.

Sass-O-Rev: O Jerusalem

The two I read were "Justice Hall" and "Locked Rooms". Justice Hall was the one I remember having a lot of descriptive exposition in - too much, in my opinion. I think it got in the way of the story. Locked Rooms was a great read, however. I may have to go back through that one again before picking up another. Perhaps this time I will try to read them in order instead of just nabbing a random Sherlock Holmes story (which is what I did to find these books).

I don't know, I just had higher expectations from listening to people on Fark and elsewhere talking about it. It was supposed to be some kind of brilliant modern re-imagining and instead it was just good.

Still good, but just good.

And yes, I have read the books.

Justice Hall was a follow-up of O Jerusalem; Locked Rooms is another of my favourites. You might be interested in starting at the beginning with "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" and work your way forward, for a bit more continuity.

I like the first movie. However, this is an action/adventure series. It does not carry on the spirit of the books. Only the location and character names are the same.

He's been considered for adaptations, along with John Goodman. I see Oliver Platt doing that role brilliantly.

Love this series. I wasn't sure about this Moriarty until his face twisted and he said "I'll burn you. I'll burn...your...soul!" A study in Pink was brilliant.

The interesting thing is that Brett was manic-depressive, and if you watch his performance as Holmes, it comes through in the role, while Cumberbatch is playing him as a sociopath.

My view is that the other two episodes more than make up for the Triad episode. The fact that they managed to make something watchable out of "A Study in Scarlet" (which is the worst of the Holmes stories and full of stereotypes) is nothing short of a miracle.

That's positively Craig-level Bond right there.

Granted, the man was a serial killer.

Subby is a pillock.

Holmes was always the smartest man in the room bearing a completely un-guiled contempt for the stupidity of those around him. The only place he felt he could be evenly matched was in a contest of fisticuffs (yes - I used the word). Naturally Holmes studied pugilism. Ritchie got that part right.

Although RDJ just doesn't fit the clothes of Holmes who is described as tall and muscular with a hawkish nose.

Sad to say, PBS hacked them up when they aired them in the US to allow for Alan Cumming's intro and so forth. It was depressing.
