Beaten to death. By fellow students. Civilization, ladies and gentlemen.

Seriously, I think there should be a simple rule: Get caught hazing in ANY FORM and you are expelled and placed on a list of people who will never be permitted to enroll at a university. Ever. Set up a system that explicitly protects whistleblowers, and levy the same penalty on anyone who retaliates against those who stand up against hazing.

This penalty should be levied against everyone INCLUDING the students who consent to be "initiated". Yes, that sounds a bit like punishing the victim, but think about it -- it would give any member an excuse to refuse, beyond being "chicken". Saying that you won't go through a hazing ceremony because you really want to continue to be a college student is a stronger position to be able to take than simply not wanting to be hazed.

This should count for not just the criminals who beat their fellow students to death (those assholes should also be prosecuted for voluntary manslaughter) but the "soft hazing" committed by other groups. Yes, I'm looking at you, sororities that weigh their pledges weekly and threaten to kick out pledges who gain weight.

I'd beat Subby to death for not using the proper Florida tag.

Can't they just march them around with dildos in their butts like they did to us in my fraternit...

Wait a minit. I didn't pledge a frat. Who the hell WERE those guys!?

The findings were announced after police earlier this week arrested three FAMU band members for a hazing incident in which they allegedly broke a female band member's thigh during a severe beating.

Either OWWW, or, you can break your thigh?

Wait, aren't the newbies the ones to get hazed? This guy was 26 years old and the drum major - the leader. Something doesn't make sense.

Instead of hazing gotten out of hand...perhaps...it was...

They would have shut down most university organizations for anything like this. But it's football, and the cancerous mutation of the greek system has it's own protection as well. Any other group would be farked. Love it.

This sounds like a "beat in" or a "jump in." Are marching bands the new street gangs?

Back in my day, hazing mostly involved large amounts of alcohol.

Breaking a thigh can be done, but it takes quite a bit of force (compared to other major bones) to do so. That's why the report specified that the thigh was broken instead of the more generic "broken leg" (which is 99% the tibia or the fibia). It really illustrates how bad the beating was.

Why?

It's an all-around consensual activity. If someone is dumb enough to do any of the stupid crap that hazing is associated with them, society may be better off without them

Meh, these are no more than simple frat boy pranks, not much more different than what we did at Abu Ghraib. Hell, as a freshman at Nebraska back when I was 14 they beat the hell out of me for my initiation into Ndam Kong Su fraternity and I took it like a man. And now you libs want to make it into some "crime"? The wienerification of America continues. Also my head hurts.

When you consider that hazing, and the attendant injuries/deaths, happen in ALL states, you might think otherwise.

You forgot to add "criminal penalties including mandatory jail time for assault and battery". Stop calling these FULLY ADULT COLLEGE STUDENTS "kids" and "children" and start prosecuting them the way you SHOULD be.

For some reason, in black fraternities, hazing involves beating. Pretty farking scary beatings sometimes. There was a black dude in my dorm who got wisked away by members of the black fraternity he was rushing. The next days, tghe dude was covered in bruises.

The guy was 26 years old. Seems a little old to be involved with hazing much less the one being hazed. It looks like Florida A&M band is more hardcore than the Marine Corps. At least they don't kill their own guys.

Maybe you would've known that had you gotten a more useful undergrad degree while in college :p

HBO's Real Sports did a whole story on marching band hazing at traditionally black colleges. They saw this coming a year ago.

SnakeMan: Who consents to be hazed?

Pretty much anyone who goes through it.

Hazing to get into a frat, for example. No one's putting the olive in your butt or making you hold the lit match, You gotta do that on your own.

But hazing has been around FOREVER and quite frankly will remain no matter how hard you try to legislate it out of existence. It's part of human nature to fark with people. That's why every religion has a trickster deity.

Sure, sometimes people die like this. But for everyone who dies there's a whole lot more who just go home and try to scrub the smell of oilves outta their underoos.
