I feel like a horrible person for getting excited about this. But damnitt, I find all the surreal pageantry involved in papal elections fascinating. I also enjoy primary elections and royal weddings, so at least I'm consistent in my weird. Plus, it's not like I'm a big fan of Benedict, so the only reason I'd be sad to see him retire is if they elected an even bigger jerkwad to fill his fancy red shoes.

Can't wait for this criminal pedophile abettor to rot. The world is better off without people like this. Farking pervert.

I wish him well, but he really was a terrible choice for Pope anyway, and a sign of just how desperately out of touch the upper echelons of the Catholic Church are.

"Hey, charges that our priests molest kids are really threatening our future. I know, let's elect the guy probably most responsible for making sure pedo priests didn't actually get punished Pope!'

He is what as know as a place holder Pope. One to maintain the Church while a younger crowd comes into the Vatican.

So, the next pope is peter the roman? That sounds mildly foreboding, admittedly..

He's old. Old people tend to look tired.

The sooner he's burning in hell with the rest of the popes, the better.

Meh. He is a placeholder Pope. Next best choice was likely considered too inexperienced, and thus we have someone this old being elected Pope. The most reasonable choice would be a Latin or African Pope because of the shift in the faithful populations.

Good riddance. Benedict has been an atrocious representative of the Catholic Church. We need someone more like St. (crossing fingers!) John Paul II.

Pedophilia is a terrible thing, but we shouldn't throw the baby boys out with the bath water. There is a lot of good the Church can still do in these troubled times.

I pray our next Papa will be a unifying figure.

He's a creepy pedo so why he got elected to be the pedo rings head in the first place i'll never know. It's like hiring a car jacker as a valet. Maybe the next big hat guy will be slightly less sinister looking.

Nah. I'm thinking American. Hasn't been an American one. I'd bet it would scare the bejesus out of Southern Baptists thinking that the Papists are trying out-muscle them.

I don't think that JPII didn't know about pedophilia in the Church. It's been happening for A LONG TIME. I personally know of a victim: My Great-grandmother. It happened during the turn of the damn century.

That's one possible tactic, but it's probably about equally likely that they'd pick an American Pope specifically to try and stop the bleeding there.

Frankly, I suspect the next Pope won't be from any of these regions, though. Benedict's election signaled a lurch toward traditionalism, and if there's a new election soon then most of the cardinals who elected Benedict will be voting again. I'm guessing they'll go back to someone they perceive as nice and safe, probably Italian.

While I do not wish death upon anyone as a matter of principle (I didn't even feel joy at the death of Osama Bin Laden, I just recognized it had to be done) I do see your point.

My main issue with Benedict is that he basically blamed everyone except the Priests themselves when it came to charges of pedophilia. In the modern age, the Catholic church needs a Pope who will put his foot down and is willing to excommunicate anyone found guilty of pedophilia regardless of their status within the church.

While it might not completely stop the abuse, it will do a lot to insulate the church as a whole from the actions of such Priests. and enable the Catholic church to focus more on actually helping people.

You don't know what he does in his spare time; what with that vow of celibacy, the imagination no doubt runs wild and visits some strange and dark places.

As for looking tired, the Dark Side takes its toll on a man.

JPII was much worse on the paedo thing. He absolutely took the view that it was noone's business and that the priests were the ones who needed help and sympathy. He just gets a HUGE pass. This one isn't much better, and is much worse on other issues. He will be no sad loss.

I've read that a great number of Popes have had various women/children/men smuggled into the Vatican to fulfill their sexual fantasies. Of course, it's all kept very hush-hush because of his supposed vows.

I think you suffer from some misconceptions regarding excommunication. It isn't a punishment, it's supposed to invite someone to repentance, and it's lifted as soon as one declares repentance. There would be some formalities, but overall it would be largely theatrical. They don't need to be excommunicated, they need to be removed from the priesthood, permanently.
